My mom had a liter of puppies on June 30th. 3 boys and 1 girl. Last night she noticed that one of the puppies was not doing well and called me I went over and one of the little boys is way smaller then the others I have heard of cleft palate so I opened his mouth and he does have it. I have the puppy at my home right now my mom is worried she would not be able to care for him properly. He is in a basket with a heating pad underneath set on low. I have been syringe feeding him every 2 hours and he seems to be doing ok.
With that said I have a few questions that hopefully some one can help me with since I know nothing about it except the puppy will die if not fed every 2 hours.
1. Is it possible that the puppy will make it and not have to be put down?
2. What can I do to help it survive?
3. Would it be in the puppies best interest to just have it put down?
If anyone has any info on anything about cleft palate please let me know.
It really depends on how severe the cleft palete is. Most do not make it, and end up either dieing on their own, or having to be put to sleep. When they start eating and drinking on their own, you have to evaluate how big the hole is. I have heard of dogs getting surgery, but chi pups are awfully small.
If it was my pup, I would take it to a vet and see what they reccomend.
