I had read that german shepards are only to be bathed twice a year because of depleting their oils, welll my dog goes to the lake almost every weekend so when she comes home we bathe her we dont always use shampoo so i'm asking is there an alternative? im wondering if just rinsing her off would be better than using shampoo and if getting in the lake water that often could also cause more skin problems and how can we help to keep her natural oils from depleting
I would think after swimming in the lake and not being bathed after awhile she would start to stink. You could try using a soap free shampoo on her if you are going to be bathing her that often. Or you could try using a waterless shampoo and just spot clean her.
I've never heard that GSD's should only be bathed 2x a year and I've had them all my life. The information about stripping the oils of the coat is correct so you don't want to bathe her too often. Maybe every couple of months would be enough for normal dogs who don't go swimming every week in a lake.
If you've been bathing her when she comes home from the lake, and she doesn't have itchy, dry, flaky skin, I'd just keep doing it the way you're doing it. You don't want her so stinky that nobody wants to touch her! LOL
