Google a website called the dog food project. It goes through every ingredient that is found in dog foods and whether it should be avoided. It explains what each ingredient is also so you cam decide for yourself if it is good or bad. A basic rule of thb is to stick to foods that contain no corn, wheat, or soy products as these are the major things to cause food related allergies in dogs. Another rule of thb is the food should cOntain named protein sources and their should be at least 2 in the first four ingredients. By named I mean chicken vs poultry or beef vs meat or salmon vs fish.
Iams is not a great food. It's ok but there are better foods out there that cost the same. Some shepherds can be finicky eaters. Adding things like bacon grease to the food is not only extremely horrible for them, you could be making the finickiness worse. She's going to continue holding out for something good to be added to the food and eventuallyay decide that she only wants what you've been adding and stop eating dog food entitrely. If you want to add something to the food stick with canned dog foods. EVO makes a gfreat canned food as does Merricks. Stay away from any dog food you can buy in a grocery or walmart store. Merricks is great because it's actual meat and veggies in the food. It's not all ground up and processed into a mush. My dogs flip for that food.
