me and my new wife just bought a single family home in a rural area in Ma. We have been wanting to a get a dog since we moved in but are fighting with ourselves on what to get. She is absolutley in love with weimaraners and labs, as am I. The preferred would be the weim but i want to make sure that the dog is going to be just as happy as us. We both work full time 8-5, we are in our mid 20's and mildly active, we dont go out running or anything but we do plenty or work outside on the house. we have about a 6000 sqft fenced in yard and i myself have plenty of experience with dogs. my main concern is "will this dog be happy with our lifestyle?"
Please don't mistake weimaraners as being "like labs", they are actually quite different in temperament and energy requirements. I've raised and owned them in the past, still own but no longer raise them as it was hard finding homes for them where the people understood exactly what they were getting into with a weimaraner. The breed is not as forgiving when unintended mistakes are made in their upbringing. They can easily develope destructive behavior if not interacted with enough. Some are just down right hard to control if they do not receive enough exercise. A natural alpha leader is required of the owner or the weimaraner will assume the role which can lead to all sorts of household problems.
Labs are more forgiving in their temperaments. Granted they have a fair amount of energy but are a little less naturally dominate in their role in the family. Labs are popular for a reason.
I don't want to make weims sound like a nightmare of a breed but putting them into the same class as labs is such a common mistake and the weimarner usually gets the short end of the stick.
