Short Summary: We had two labs who were together since puppies. At age 7, our chocolate lab passed away. Our yellow lab is now 9 and have never been the same. He now displays serious separation anxiety problems that we hoped would get better as time went on, but have only gotten worse. When we are gone for more than a couple hours, he destroys flooring, drags things out of our laundry room and pees on them, etc. The vet has now put him on doggie Prozac. I am a mostly work at home mom, so he is not alone very often, but the behaviors are much worse when it is dark outside.
We are considering getting another dog for companionship. Our concerns are that a puppy might cause even more anxiety for him since he is an older dog. He is not always super friendly to other dogs when we take him on walks at the park (doesn't growl or snap, just gets really intense and does not wag tail).
Thoughts on if we should get another dog? and if so, what kind? We would prefer a medium size dog rather than a lap dog or large dog. Probably would prefer going to the shelter or rescue rather than breeder. We have two boys, age 5 and 7, so need a family friendly breed. Thanks for any thoughts or ideas!
