Who's a good boy!? Norman is! Norm is my rat terrier-- I'm guessing he is about 8 mths old. I rode my bike while he ran alongside me on his leash. I am absolutely in shock about how perfectly he did it! He stayed right beside me, never once getting too close to the bike or, god forbid, in *front* of the bike. When I turned, I did it really slow and hit the brake. Not only is he watching anyway, but the brake makes a noise that gets his attention, and he turns with me, always staying at the perfect safe spot. First time ever. I barely believe it.
We have been working very hard, and with good success at *walking* onleash. He does great in the yard and on the road, not so great at Petsmart. So he does know about not walking or running ahead of the person with the leash, or pulling off to the side. But with the bike, I think he's just clever enough to know that the big bike isn't going to stop so he can look at dogs in fences, sniff mailboxes, or chase leaves, and that 3-4 feet to the left of the bike is the spot where he will not get hurt. He seems to be incredibly good at this due to nothing more than common sense!
Holy cow, what a way to get way more exercise in. And just amazing to see how fast a dog can go! Do any of you bike with your dogs?
