My 11-year-old black Labrador had a cluster of fits for the first time 9 months ago and needed emergency treatment to stop them. She had diazapan injections and was put on phenabarbitone tablets, the dose of which has been slowly reduced over the last 9 months. She had shown no sign of any fits and was back to her normal self. Then last Friday she started fitting again, in clusters, again needing emergency treatment, as before. She was put back on 2 60mg phenabarbitone tablets twice daily and we are back to square 1. My vet seems a little puzzled by the long time between the first clusters and this latest episode. Has anyone experienced this problem?
Sorry to hear that. Did your vet have a guess about why, after 11 years, she is having seizures? My dog has epilepsy. It started just about when she turned 1, so it has been about 5 months. She's on 60mg phenobarbitol twice a day also. Best of luck, keep us posted.
My vet suggested an mri scan to determine if my Lab has a brain tumor. But this is done under general anaesthesia. I am a little reluctant to put an 11-year-old through this procedure. Apart from this suggestion the vet went through the usual guesses of has she eaten something in the garden, or licked the polished kitchen floor.
