Toby acted so different last nite. I went by my friends house on the way home from work and she had another dog there that was visiting. I picked it up, played with it and hugged and kissed it. When I got home, Toby came running up to me like usual, I picked him up and went to give him kisses and he turned his head and snubbed me. He would not give me kisses back. He proceeded to be a little turd all night. Barking, nipping at me, just plain pissy. Was he mad because he smelled another dog on me or this behavior change due to his age? He is 7 months old.
They can definately smell another dog on you. I would give it a little time, like today and see if he's better. If not it could be puppy behavior, not sure. But I do know for sure they can smell other animals on you.
Probably a combination of both. Like teenagers, dogs seem to go through an independent stage in their lives when they are about 7 or 8 months old. You really should not let your dog nip at you, especially when it's obvious that he's doing it because he is 'mad' at you or trying to dominate you. If he does it again, I'd put a leash on him and do some obedience training that puts him in submissive positions.
Thanks for the advice. He was definitely pissed. He just kept looking at me and barking, I couldn't figure out why. I took him outside to potty and he ran off behind the shed and found an old chicken bone, that had fallen out of the trash. When I discovered it, I took it away. Maybe he was mad about that. The next time we went out to potty, I leashed him and he was having a fit, jumping and twisting around and biting at the leash. He finally settled down and went potty. The rest of the evening he was not himself. I will leash him tonite in the house if he continues to nip at me. I have two teenage boys, now I have a teenage dog? LOL OMG!!!! I hope he doesn't want a car too!!LOL
He was deffinately jealous of other dog smell. My Mother-in-law's Schnauzer does it to us whenever we go and play with my fiance's lhasa apso's, or with our friends pit mix puppy. She come to cuddle, smell the puppies and then snort like a pig (yes she thinks she is a house pig) and then she will ignore us until we shower and change our clothes. Some dogs will even rub all over you to get there scent on you to mask the scent of another dog. Fun for humans, sad for jealous pups.
