I have 4to bloodhounds, 2 red females, a black and tan female and a black and tan male. I have noticed that the reds shed more than the black and tans do. Is this normal? Also what do others use to brush their hounds? After almost 8 years im still trying to find a good brush for them that actually works. Thanks
I don't know about the red Hounds, but the Bloodhound in general is a big shedder. What I have used is a regular "shedding blade." You should use firm strokes, but not so hard that the dog squeals. My last Bloodhound shed so much that I used to spend twenty minutes or so at least every other day brushing him. Once you develop an experienced stroke, they actually really enjoy being brushed, I think because you are removing dead hair which probably irritates them somewhat. But I would just stop after a while, simply because it seemed that I could go on indefinitely removing more and more. Btw---the B-hound has no hair, only fur. Most dogs have a mixture of hair and fur, but the scenthounds have only fur.
