We recently bought a jack russell puppy - now about 18 weeks old. He's a great little dog, and surprisingly good with our two young kids. However, one of the main reasons we decided on a jack russell was that the house we live in currently is an old house and at times has a rodent problem. I was hoping the jack russell would solve that problem. Today though, to my absolute horror there was a rat in the kitchen today. I brought my little dog in and closed the door, hoping that when I moved the fridge and the rat ran across the floor that my jack russell would instinctively chase the rat. What happened instead was that my dog trembled in the corner from the noise of the fridge moving and refused to be involved. So......what now? I'm wondering if my puppy is just too young to chase rats. I can find a lot of evidence that jack russells are generally reliable rat-catchers, but I can't find anything on what age they become able to do it. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate it!
