I am trying to navigate the confusing world of dog breeds and have a funny lifestyle into which i can't decide which dog will be a good best friend! I know lots of people have a passionate understanding of breed types and would love their thoughts.
I have spent lots of time with dogs, but never owned or been responsible for one - i know it will be a challenge
What i have and do : - Smallish flat with small grassy garden in London, near a big park where i run frequently. - Run a small company and have an office to which I would like to take my dog - I know all dogs bark and have their moments, but I need calm temper from a dog and comfort around quite a few people (i guess a breed that gets smelly easily and sheds a lot will be a no go for my co-workers!) - I would love to commute with my dog by cargo bike - this i'm sure will take time to get working, but a brave dog thats ok with lots of hustle and bustle is required - I like dogs that are big enough to have a good wrestle with if possible. - At the weekends I get out of town and spend a lot of time by the sea - so a dog breed which is hardy and a competent swimmer would be amazing. - I don't need any guard dog instincts
Ok the key word I picked up on is SMALL. A ShihTzu sounds perfect...small, but tough, not yappy at all, doesn't really shed, and very cute. Regular grooming keeps them smelling fresh...not a Stinky breed like terriers. Terriers usually have oily skin and that's what causes the stink. I can't think of any other small breed that's quiet. ok biggish breed? than I'd go with a Miniature Schnauzer. Not that small but a nice feisty breed, but might make more noise than a Shih. Here in the States, a ShihTzu was used in weight pulling events at UKC shows..his name was BamBam and I think he pulled like 550 pounds...sounds pretty tough to me...I'm thinking of changing breeds to the Shih...unbelievable for a tough Texas gal. They are that nice of dogs
