I am brand new to this site and also a brand new puppy owner. I got a 4 month old male beagle pup (named Ippy) for my younger son (10 yr. old)as an early Christmas gift. I have never owned a puppy before...or an inside dog, for that matter. My son begged for a beagle for 2 years and we finally were able to get one. Of course, I researched as much info. as I could well beforehand to know what I would be getting into with both the beagle breed and the puppy age but I do need some advice on a couple of things. More about Ippy: We've only had him for a week now. He was an outside dog when we got him but are planning on keeping him as an inside pet as we have no fence. He gets frequent outdoor and play time--always on a lead--and is doing well with potty training. He is super smart and loving and is also doing well with voice commands like "leave it" and "no." (All within one week-woohoo!)He also is very good with me and my older 13 yr.old son BUT: Problem #1: He jumps on and nips at the clothes and hands of my 10 yr. old son---who was dying to get the puppy in the first place. He actually made contact thru my son's jeans 2 nights ago. The pup never does this to anyone else but my younger son. Problem #2: He also jumps up on and tries to "hump" (sorry. didn't know what word to use) my younger son---his leg, his back, his arm, etc. He also did this to my mom's leg but those 2 are the only people he does it with as well. I work from home so I spend the most time with him and he does not do any of those things with me. He even takes treats from my hand super gently. And I know he's teething. He constantly chews on his dog toys. I will not have an animal that my child/children have to live in fear of, but I do not want to give up on the cute li'l fella. (I may have to find him another home anyway, because I have developed allergies to him...and if I can't get them under control---) Also #3: His ears stink. I have bathed him a couple of times already and I brush him every 3-4 days but I left his ears alone because I did not know what to do with them yet and did not want to hurt him. Any suggestions? I know this was a long post, but I greatly appreciate any and all help and so does Ippy!
Oh this sounds like a troll. These are, except the nipping, behaviors of an older-already through -puberty puppy or dog. puppy ears at that age shouldn't stink. Clean 'em, lady. 4month old pups that hump should be pushed down at the sholders and told NO in a low loud gruff tone. Humping isn't a sexual behavior at that age. Too many terms that an ameteur wouldn't know....leave it is a term most beginners don't know.... unless you're going to puppy classes and in that case, those ears would have been addressed and the humping too. get a life
