I have a 60lb pit bull that is a female. On christmas day she got into a fight with my other pit bull over water in the christmas tree. She has 2 different bite wounds on her neck, one on each side. I do not have the money to take her to the vet but my vet did say that I could go to the tractor supply store and get her some penicillin but would not say how much to give her for her weight. I was thankful for the info she did give me. I cleaned her 2 wounds out, and I am still doing so 3x a day. I need to to know if someone can tell me how much penicilllin I should give her for her wight. She has no allergies towards penicillin as she has been on it in the past. If I had the extra money a trip to the vet would be without question, but that is not the case. She is starting to form an abcess on 1 of the punture wounds(I know what to look for as she had one before several yrs ago). I want to get this under contol immediately. I looked on the tractor supply store website and found the penicillin(from a worker at the store who was nice enough to share this info). As follows DurvetŪ Pen Aqueous, 100 mL, I know to give it sq but not the dose, any information from a vet or a very knowlegable person on here would be extremely grateful. If I forgot to include any information needed for the dosage please ask, I am trying my best here. Thank you all in advance!!!
Yes...i would give 2-4 cc's for a dog that size. 3 cc is a good dose for the first shot, then 1 cc after that for 2 more days. Don't get the long acting penicillan, get the regular. do not put any ointment on puncture wounds, just as you are doing, clean them with soap every day or when coming in from an outting. Give this shot sub q...under the skin not in a muscle. lift up the scruff of the neck like a tent, and stick the needle in the hollow area and inject. it might have a little bump, but will absorb into the body in a few hours. he may scrath the pen is a bit irritating. He should heal just fine with very minimal scarring. oops just read the thread better...if there is an abcess, go with 4 cc the first day, 2 cc 2 more days. do NOT use ointment type meds, such as neosporin, that seals the infection in the wounds. sounds like you're doing everything right.
