I have a 5 year old Maltese. When I got him I was young and naive. I did not train him right. He has complete control. Before you say it.... I know. That was my first mistake! He is not good with other dogs. I didn't think it was THAT bad because we have a lot of dogs in our family (brothers dogs and dads) so whenever we all get together he avoids them, but is not too bad. As long as they don't get in his face. He is great with older kids... Not the best with babies because they want to tug on him, etc... Again... I really didn't think it was that bad.. Not until I really started to analyze everything after this next part happened.
Well my husband really wanted another dog and everybody said he'd be different if the dog was around every day. Well he's not. The puppy is a malamute/husky mix. he is very good and loving!
The dogs are not always bad together but the maltese is definitely not being a loving big brother. To make matters worse when the puppy wants to play the Maltese shows his teeth. And barks. I tried taking the Maltese away and he bit me. Hard. Twice.
I don't know what to do. I now know that we should not have brought a new dog into the house. But would it have mattered? We don't have kids yet... But what if he bites my kids when we do have children. I do not want to get rid of the alusky. He is a good boy and my husbands dream dog. But my Maltese is my baby. Is there a way to keep them both and retrain the Maltese or do I have to give him away?
