Opinions please. I am a 67 year old female and I am thinking about getting a german shepard puppy this coming week-end. I am concerned because I don't know if this breed of dog will be too much for me to handle when she gets older. I want a dog for protection but I also want to be able to take it for walks and such. Any opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
We currently have two german shepherds and we used to have a lab. In my experience, labs are very kind compared to shepherds. They are very playful but obedient. Labs can be your most loyal friend. Have you thought about getting a lab instead?
There are many dog breeds that may suit you. The individual dog is more important then the breed. German Shepherds are very strong and active dogs. They may be too much for someone not so strong. But the same can be said of Labrador retrievers. Even with Labradors, its important to select one from calmer bloodlines. English type Labradors may be more suited, but again, they need to be well trained. Choose wisely.
