Hello everyone, I rescued a dog from a T.V. repairman that came by to pick up an old tv and had this dog in the back of his truck ready to take him and have him put down. Don't know what I had in my head to take the dog because he was growling at me while in the man's truck. I felt sorry for him because I could see that he was growling out of fear. The man said he was having him put down because of alpha male problems with his other dog. The dog was in rough shape...all torn up with scars, ears that were still bleeding from being in fights, and his backbone and ribs were showing. I took him in and gave him a piece of turkey sandwich meat to get him to settle down and let me pet him. Ended up getting him into the bath, because he has a bad odor problem, and all seemed to be going pretty well. Then he snapped at my 8 year old when he came near his bedding. I worked with him to trust all 3 of my children because he growled at them and he seemed to be becoming a good family dog. However, he still growls at strangers and I can deal with him meeting people when he's in my presence but recently I put him outside because of his terrible odor and he began to tear things up when I leave as well as steal my food as soon as I would turn my back. Things were seeming to go well for a couple of weeks then I received a call from a neighbor 2 houses down telling me he was over there growling at him and his workers. Next day the neighbor 2 houses down in the other direction called animal control on him because her dog was in heat and he was over there...well you know why. I made an appointment to get him neutered this Wednesday in hopes that it will calm some of his aggressive behavior down and leave the neighbors alone. I've had him back in the house and am taking him out on a leash until then ....except yesterday I needed to work on my greenhouse so I tied him up so I could have 2 free hands. He chewed right thru the rope and started off towards the neighbors and would not come to me when I called. She was yelling at him and I yelled at him as well and when he finally ran from the neighbor to me I tried to grab his collar but accidentally jammed my fingers into his neck and he turned around and bit my hand then immediately submissed when I got the leash on and yanked it while fussing at him for biting me. I did not yell at that point but I was furious and I am sure he knew it. This is an extremely long post but I wanted to get as much info out there as possible to see if anyone has any ideas to help with his growling at other people. He was being aggressive to me and I didn't realize it until I read up on some other issues that I won't include here because it's too long already but it had to do with dominance. Any help would be appreciated.

Getting him fixed will help a little, but you need to take him to a behavior specialist. Dominance can become a big problem if not addressed. I recommend looking online for a trainer in your area, someone trained to deal with aggressive breeds, not just the classes at a local pet store, which are great but if he has bitten you, you will need more aggressive training. I hope this helps, Good Luck and you did a good thing trying to save this dog.
