I recently adopted a rescue Pom. She was a Breeder surrender (sadly). She's not used to be around people or even grass. She's skiddish as you'd believe. She follows me everywhere, I guess she's trying to keep her eye on me so I don't jump out and eat her. I want her to warm up to me and I'm willing to put the time in to potty train her and leash train her (which she doesn't seem to like). Right now she's just staring at me, I don't want to force myself on her, but I don't want to ignore her either. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
Totally Stupid New Mommie!!!
PS-I've had her less than a day. Yeah I know...I'm pretty skiddish too. As ridiculous as this sounds i"m afraid I might brake her.
I just rescued a mother/daughter duo of Poms too. I worried they were going to be skittish too since they were rescued from a yard in a verifiable ghetto. But, Poms are smart and they love to be with people. I think yours is following you because it wants to be with you. Sit on the floor with it and have some treats in hand. call it to you and give a treat every time it responds. Be very affectionate with your pom and I don't think you can go wrong, unless you forget it's a dog and it starts forgetting your the boss. My girls follow me all over my 1 room apartment, and I kinda like it. We're not being stalked. They just love to be with us.
These are my first small dogs. I'm used to shepherds and rotties, so I was worried about breaking them too. They are much more resilient than you think. My girls love getting a pretty strong full body massage and rough housing with each other.
It only took a week for their personalities to come out and I think they are two fantastic dogs. You'll have the same experience, I know it! Good luck!!!
