Alright, so we recently moved into a new house with a killer backyard! Our 3 cats are very content and happy in the house so we decided to adopt a long-awaited dog. She is about a year old, very playful, crate trained, and has lived with cats before so she basically ignores them after she investigates their smell. However, our cats now have taken to hiding in the basement and in the bathroom. It's only been a day,so i'm very hopeful, but i'm mostly worried about our younger cat, Sheeba. She's probably 2 or 3 years old, also a rescue cat that we've had for a year, so we don't know much about her past, but she's been holed up in the bathroom ever since we moved in. She hardly eats or drinks and is now terrified to use her litter box. I showed it to her again last night and that;s where she slept. The dog sleeps in her crate at night to encourage the cats to explore and get used to the new family member. I've read online that the only thing I can do is give them time, place dog-smell things around them and encourage them to feel comfortable. I don't want our cats to feel like they have to stay "banished" in the basement.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
