Hi Guys, wondering if anyone has had experience with their dogs nail splitting. It is the same nail every time. My blue heeler keeps splitting the same toe nail horizontally, front left lateral toe. This has happened 5 times in the last 3 years. Each time the vet has to knock her out to pull out the nail. The vet has treated for fungal infection but then it happened again so he has written that off as the cause. The vet has suggested there may have been some kind of trauma to the toe and this nail split will continue to happen as the nail won't ever grow back properly. He suggested to either have the nail removed each time it splits or to have the nail surgically removed p3 amputation. This seems a bit extreme but we hate having her to be knocked out each time and being in pain when nail split. If we opt for the toe joint to be removed are there usually any kind of issues with walking properly, we do a large amount of exercise, climbing hills, walking beaches, running along road and hill tracks etc. what is the healing time? She is a town dog, not a working dog. Fed dog biscuits, real meat, bones, veges. Thank you for your time.
