2 weeks ago I adopted a 7 week old male Pomeranian named ‘DeVaughn’ (10 points if you get the reference!). He has been more than perfect and transitioned into his new home with 5 people and no other pets. He has not shown any signs of distress about leaving his litter or his previous home. He is the most spoilt dog in the world with all the attention and toys he could ever need. He is healthy, very well exercised and happy BUT he has one bad habit I am struggling to deal with. DeVaughn is an aggressive biter!
Now, I understand that it is normal for puppies to bite when they are playing or teething, which he does (he nips, bites and plays most of the time), BUT my little man can get incredibly aggressive and snarl, bark and bite at peoples faces, arms and legs. There is an obvious difference between when he is playing/teething and when he is attacking. When you play on the floor with DeVaughn or give him cuddles, he will occasionally lunge at your face with all of his teeth bearing , he will snarl, bite (VERY HARD) at your face and hands and constantly bark! He does this with everyone even when you are not paying any attention to him. He is incredibly aggressive and my family have learnt to fear him. No one has ever been aggressive towards him and there is no reason for his aggression. I questioned the vet about this behavior and she suggested to mist him with water when he does this or to squeal very loudly to startle him and make him realize that it hurts and he should not do it. Only problem is, when you spray him with water, he enjoys it.. And when you squeal loudly in pain, he keeps going because he thinks I am fighting back (remember, he is not being playful). I lock him in the laundry for a couple minutes to teach him not to bite but he comes back out even angrier! He has only had his 1st lot of vaccinations and he is not yet desexed (he is only 9 weeks old at the moment) and other than the aggressive biting, he is very much trainable, especially for such a young dog. He is happy, healthy and sleeps as much as a puppy should and is very well exercised.. But he is occasionally aggressive. Im at my wits end and I have wounds on my arms and face from his biting. Trust me, this is NOT normal puppy behavior! This is intentionally vicious! Is this an alpha male problem? (Is he trying to challenge my authority?) Is it because he is not desexed? How can I train him not to be aggressive? Please help!
