I have a male Lhasa Apso - Hiro, who was recently diagnosed as diabetic 7/1/13. He was put on insulin and prescription dog food (w/d). Prior to him being diabetic, we would leave dog food out and he would eat whenever. Now, we have a set schedule where he eats a certain amount, twice a day.
He has had quite a journey since then as we found out he had ulcers in both eyes. Surgery was done to remove but upon removal, we found out he had cataracts as well. He recently had the cataract surgery beginning of December.
I know he is stressed due to everything he has gone through the past 5-6 months. He as lost a lot of weight. We have been going to his Vet and they prescribed a vitamin supplement to help him gain some muscle, but as of yet, I haven't visually noticed any weight gain.
I have tried giving him eggs, chicken, even fish (all OK'd by his Vet) to see if this would help. Still, I haven't noticed any weight gain. He did lick his paws and bite his skin a lot a day or two after eating the eggs/chicken - so we stopped feeding him that. When we feed him fish, the next morning, he would sleep in till about 9 - 10am. Which is not normal - he normally is up around 730 - 8am.
Any help or suggestions would be grateful. I have tried to do research on my own to find some answer as with all the surgery's, medications, prescription dog food and visits, it has become quite costly.
I think I need more info? Is the dog castrated? How old is the dog? Did the vet say he was underweight? If you were to put him on a diet that would bulk him up you may just have to put him on a higher dose of insulin.
When I look up into the sky, I think to myself, Wheres the ceiling? <br>
Hiro has been neutered (2yrs ago) and he is about 5yrs and 8 months. His vet did say he was concerned about his weight being that he dropped so much compared to the prior visits - you can visibly see his ribs and his spine. The beginning of the year he was at 20lbs or so, around June he weighed in at 19lbs, a few weeks later at 18lbs, around October 16lbs and a month ago at 13lbs. He just seems to fragile to hold as I am not use to seeing him at this weight. He doesn't have a problem eating his food, he eats it all up.
Cost is a huge issue and I am contemplating on asking the doctor what the risks are of discontinuing his insulin. I feel that right now, I need to make sure he is at a healthy weight and less stressed and possibly going back to non-prescribed dog food that doesn't cost as much.
