Since we're on the subject of pottytraining, how can I get my dog to go more quickly? She doesn't go in the house, but we have no fence, so its four walks a day and she has to walk a block and a half before she goes. I don't mind in the nice weather but pretty soon I'm going to be freezing my a.. off. Do you think she'll get to it sooner when it gets cold out? I have to add that when I just walk in the yard and tell her to go, she lays in the grass or rolls over belly up for a scratch and won't move.
Get an exercise pen, gotta tell you, it is the best investment you will ever invest in. Get one high enough so she won't jump over it. Right after she eats, and once an hour, put her in there and go back inside. Keep an eye on her, though. If you use these, put a potty pad outside for a bit. ---Allie the Chihuahua http://www.dogster.com/?41063 ---Mönica the Kitty http://www.catster.com/?57596
Lalayla, do you associate a phrase when your puppy goes to the bathroom? As she is going, no matter where you are (outside of course) say something like GO POTTY (not yelling, but you know what I mean, so she hears you and knows you are speaking to her.). Afterwards, say Good girl, treat, etc. This will take time, but she will associate "going" with the phrase GO POTTY. And maybe when you bring her out in the winter, you will be able to say GO POTTY and she will go on command! You know, youre kind of lucky you dont have a yard. I remember when I was at home last year from school for a month for christmas, Abby was only like 5 months old. Whenever we'd let her in the yard (its big) we could never get her back in. We'd be in pajamas chasing her through the snow!!! She thought it was just the funnest thing in the world to be chased, she'd get down on the ground and let us get like 3 inches from her, then she'd bolt. crazy pups!
I use an exercise pen, to high for mine to jump out of, and he knows he has to go in there, doesn't get out until he has gone. I also have gotten him to go on a leash, but pen is easier, especially in rain or cold, i can watch him from just inside door or out window, and open window and say good boy, lol.
