the first weekend we moved into our apt, my college roomie and i went to a fair. we won a goldfish. this was the only pet the apt complex allowed. we called him fishy. we never though he'd live a week, come on, he was from a fair! so she bought a bowl, gravel, food, decorations for the bowl, etc. she religiously cleaned the tank every three days. well, this thing outlived our lease. lasted past graduation. we had to sign over custody of it to a few of our guy buds who had a huge tank in their place. well she ended up dating one of them for the next year or so, and the last time she was there it was still alive. so this county fair fish lived 2+years! although the fair was in elkton md, so we kinda figured the fish was some sort of nuclear waste reject or something...
I had a black moor fantail goldfish for 7, yes 7 years. The poor thing eventually developed some disease that crippled his spine and made him curve towards the left. He could only swim circles just before he died. It was pretty sad. I had tried to heal him with fish antibiotics, but it didn't work. He had big bug eyes and a pretty tail. My kids nick named him "Lefty" because he could only go left. LOL. Well, that is my fish story.
I had fish for roughly 20+ years & sold everything about 2 yrs ago. I had a 10 gal with dwarf African frogs & a 29 gal that had Angelfish at one time, then Columbian puffer fish. I had a 58 gallon with 1 leniatus Puffer fish (Leni) (Freshwater Puffer) he liked rubbing his lips on the glass showing his teeth. I caught him a few times puffing himself up for no reason. (I don't believe in startling fish or tapping on their glass) It's just plain cruel. He would just do it out of the blue for no reason. He had a few Pleco's for company but he eventually killed them once he got big. (They are a 1 fish per tank kinda fish, very waspish towards any other fish ) When "Leni" died around 7-8yrs of age, I took him to a Taxidermist & had him mounted. I know that sounds gross but he was an awesome fish! I also had a 75 gal tank that I on several occasions kept it as a brackish water tank with Scats, Mono Sebre's, Chromides, Brackish Puffers, moray eels, dragon fish, etc. Then I changed it back to fresh water & had it as an African Cichlid tank, Then a Central / South American Cichlid tank, then a Tangyikan Cichlid tank, then MBU Puffer tank. He grew too large & so I sold him to another person that had puffer fish as pets & he still has him. :) Many years ago I only had a 55 gal tank with two red Oscars! Funny smart fish! They would only let me feed them, If anyone went up to the tank to feed them, they would roll over onto their sides & go to the bottom on their sides, looking at the person. Fish are so relaxing to watch but just got to be too much work so I sold everything. I also used to have Whites Tree Frogs, Red Eared Turtles & an Iguana. :) Now I just have my two Furkido's! Oh the memories! Thanks all for sharing your fish stories!
halo that is just too funny. here is a story about ollie. we have a huge fish tank at work. one day the girls were talking about 1 of the goldfish who was missing most of his tail fin and all of his body fins. they were thinking of flushing him. i flipped out and told them they were all mean to do that to him. we thought the othes in the tank were beating him up. so i told them i would get him his own bowl and try and save him. they thought i was nuts. they all call me a tree hugger at work. so i got him his own bowl and bought some meds for fin and tail rot. everyone made extreme fun of me, especially since th emedicine turned his water yellow. well he we are just about 1 year later.......ollie sits on our back counter with us in the treatment room, he has a teeny tiny filter system in his goldfish bowl, with the character patrick from spongebob squarepants in with him, another fake goldfish statue, and a tree thingy. he still has no fins so he is like just a little goldfish body swimming around. he does somersaults because he can't swim right w/out fins and he swims in to the sides of his bowl cause he ca't turn fast enough. he is very funny to watch. i love him and he has grown on everyone at work. they still make fun of me but they enjoy having him in the back.
