Well I think my lil pup (Bella...3month old rot/lab mix from shelter) has learned a new way to fool mom. She was only partially housebroken and we have been extremely consistant about taking her out. Well...sometimes she just doesnt have to go. Her new thing when I am ready to go back in and tell her "go potty" she will go to one over her spots and squat, but wont actually do anything. Then she runs to me for her "go potty" treat. Is this normal? Should I still give her a treat for trying to go potty outside?
snowball does this. she is way past getting treats for going potty, but if we tell her to potty and she jsut went, but we want her to go b/c we're taking her somewhere, etc, she'll fake pee. she never did it go get more treats though. of course i'd squat with her to make sure she wasnt faking it...
Well, Bellasmommy, first I have to ask, how old is your dog? This isn't completely un-normal for a dog to do this. You have chosen the "reward for proper behavior" method of potty-training your dog and if you were to stop giving her treats, i can almost guarentee you that she will go pee or poop in the house. Even though she doesnt go, she understands that this is where she has to go, reward her and give her a pat on the back, you've got a good dog.
Thanks for the replies guys. She is 3 months old and we have only had her for 5 days now. She used to pee while being uncrated...figured out how to break that habit. Now the only time she pees in the house is when the cat gets her freaked out. Maybe now that she knows she is supposed to go outside i should slowly let up on the treats for every potty visit?
