I took Kenai over to a friends house and he was playing with their Chi/Pom mix and there 11 week old puppy(shepard mix) anyway, he came inside and I picked him up and he squeked and acted like he was choking, I quick took his harness and collar off and then he burped a few times and his stomach is hard as a rock, so I drove home and called my vet and they said it could possibly be bloat. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can at least tell me what this is. Just so you know, I am waiting for my fiancee' to come and drive us to our vet. I am going crazy waiting. I have like 20 minutes before he gets here. Any ideas on how I can help him until I can get him to the vet? If I pick him up and rub his tummy, he acts like it hurt but sometimes I can get him to burp, is that good? Kenai is only 7 months old and for those who don't know, he is a Pomeranian. This happened only 10 minutes ago. Thank you
Theer is a condition in bigger dogs where their stomach twists up and misplaces their pancreas. It dosn't really happen in little dogs though. Maybe he ate to much then went to play and got a little bit of a tummy ach. It is a good idea to take him to the vet just in case.
It is my dog and I can't because I don't have enough seats for my kids in this car. Trust me I tried to think of everyway of cramming them in and still having it be legal. Normally I have the van and my fiancee' has this car.
signs of bloat are: distended abdomen-tapping on it sounds like you are tapping on a drum, trying to vomit and not producing it, restlessness. it generally happens if they play right after they eat or right before they eat. poms are not usually susceptible to bloat but i have seen smaller dogs like cockers and daschunds bloat before.
Kenai's stomach is hard, I can't really tell if it sounds super hollow or not but he is acting like he is in pain, right now he is hiding under the couch and won't come out for anyone. That alone is not like him he is a spaz normally. He is acting like it hurts but he doesn't cry when I touch him or anything so I can't really tell.
Alright, well, we went to the vet, and I managed not to get in a wreck on the way. It turns out that Kenai's stomach was so hard because he was in tremendous pain, not because of bloat though but because during his play he tweaked his back and hurt his spine. So now he has been sent to crate rest for a week with no playing with the other dogs at all, and only allowed to go out to go potty. He was also put on Rimadyl for a week. So he is going to be fine but it may be a while before I let him rough house with my friends dogs again! lol Thank you for all of your guys' help and support. I really appreciate it!
Wow, what an ordeal. Hope he starts to feel better. Don't be alarmed if he still has pain tomorrow, sometimes injuries hurt worse on the second day. I wonder if ice would help. It is recommended for people, 20 minutes on/20 minutes off. But I don't know if it's ok for a teeny doggie. I don't see how it would hurt. Just don't get any ideas about doing heat. It intensifies inflammation.
lol, I don't think he would sit still for ice anyway. He is starting to want to play again, and I hate not being able to, I just keep telling him to settle and he gives me those sad eyes, like " mom, I just wanna play!"
