I couldn't believe it this morning, I took my daughter over to preschool and we were talking about my poms(they are coming for show and tell) and this lady asked me, "oh, you have poms, do you breed them?" and I told her yes, she said "do you have stud services?" and I told her I do but only to approved bitches and she continued to ask me if I could breed my males to her female Pom/Shih tzu mix! I couldn't believe it, I told her repeatedly that I do not breed mixes or to mixes. She even told me that she is "looking for ones with 'lots of bullets' because she needs to make back her money on the dog she bought!!!! I was dumbfounded! She said she bought her dog for $325 That alone surprised me, I didn't know what to say. I obviousely told her no and suggested spaying the dog but "she needs to make back her money first!" What do you do in a situation like this, I have to see this person three times a week!
Like what cricket said, I don't think you will be able to reason with this lady. So I don't think trying to talk her out of it will do any good. If she wants to breed her dog she will find a way. If she keeps asking you, I would just say politely, "I'm sorry. I take my breeding program very seriously and will not stud my male out to you. Good luck in your search, but please do not ask me again because my answer will be the same"
She obviously has no idea of what it takes to be a good responsible breeder. She sounds very uneducated about the whole thing. I was too, before I joined this forum. Maybe turn her onto this forum and she will ask some questions and get some educated answers. That way you don't have to be the bad guy. She might learn alot and decide not to breed her dog afterall.
Thanks Huntersmom. I think there are alot of people out there who just really don't understand. I was one of them. I actually considered for a short time, breeding my dog (Toby- 4lb. Maltese/pom when he got old enough) before getting him fixed. I was thinking that he was such a cute pup that there must be other people who would love one just like him. I wasn't thinking about money. I gave up that notion and thank God I did. I had no idea what I was about to do!! Oh the horror!!!! I have learned soooo much since I joined this in July.
May I suggest that you try another direction than confrontation. When faced with people like this my reply is that I would be more than willing to breed your little girl. I will need a current brucillosis screen, CERF and OFA certification and when she comes into season we will need to Target test her. No it doesn't matter if she is purebred or crossbred. You will need to find out from your vet what he charges. Oh and by the way my stud fee is the value of a puppy back, 1000.00 cash prior to the breeding. If you don't think the price of the stud fee is high enough to deter the person make it higher. I never refuse to sell anything to anyone, but if I have any uneasy feelings my 600.00 pet puppies suddenly become 4000.00 show prospects. (I've never actually charged more than 1000.00 for a Pom, and that was a female breeding prospect with a phenomenal, line bred heritage pedigree)
Great News(sarcasm) Apparently, as I was informed today, the ladies dog was taken to be bred yesterday to another Pom "breeder", I know this "breeder" and have had some 'issues' with him before, he will do whatever he can to make a buck, he is charging her $300 and pick of the litter, to breed her mix(who is kinda ugly, in my opinion), to his pom, unregistered. She told me she was so excited and they were going to charge $350 a pup! SHE OFFERED ME ONE!!!! I could not believe that! I bet this guy uses this mix as a breeder dog too, he is that way. And what stinks is that I can't do anything about it because he takes great care of his dogs, other than over studding his males to whoever and whatever has the money. I heard that he was breeding Pugpoms, and he actually had a high demand for them! He overprices these poor mixes, his pugpoms were advertised in the paper for $500 a piece and he sold them all in less than a week! People like him are a disgrace to people like me who try hard to breed great dogs, true to there breed. I love my pommies and there is no way, I would let them be studded out to anything but the best. I feel like stealing his dogs and getting them fixed just to get him to stop.
Although I highly respect a breeder who refuses to breed or stud to just 'anything' in order to preserve the blood line of a great dog.......what is wrong with a breeder breeding pet quality dogs for those who do not want or cannot get a dog from a shelter?
Well, a breeder's purpose is to improve their breed. They aim for the perfect replica of their Standard. If they have pet quality pups that come out of show quality parents, by all means, make a family happy & sell it to them for pet quality price.
