Hello! I am looking for a small dog that has a good temper with little kids, and also with other animals. (I have 2 labrador retreivers and a cat.) I would also prefer that it not shed but if there is a dog that is all of the above then shedding is not an issue. A few that i have found that I like from what I have read are, Norfolk Terrier, Pug, Westie (West Highland Terrier), and a Dachshund, but and information that you have on any of those would be appriciated!
hello...I see that you mentioned the westy and didnt mention the mini schnauzer...they are nice small to mid size dogs...they dont shed and are good with kids...They are small but not frail and roubust enough to take on walks and play in the floor with kids...Thats my opinion any way...I have Minpins too but I think they are more frail then they think they are,,,they think they are a big dog...not a small one...so...i wish you lick in your choice...
Yorkies are great but pretty fragile but Scotties are pretty robust dogs, as well as Westies and Schnauzers. These are the choices that I would suggest to you for the info that you gave. Doxies are great too but can have alot of health problems and you have to be careful with them jumping up and down off of things so they don't injure their backs. My soon to be brother in law had one for many years.
I have never had a full blood schnauzer, but I have have had a schnauzer/poodle mix that does not shed and was very good with kids and very, very smart. I now have another schnauzer/poodle mix...no shedding, good with kids, but not quite as smart as the other one (he 1/4 schnauzer and 3/4 poodle). One lady told me that schnauzers have the intelligence of a 4 year old child.... I don't know if that is true or not... don't jump on me...that is just what someone told me.
How old are your kids? A Yorkie might be kind of small/fragile. I think a westie is a good choice.Very sturdy, very good temprament. Shih tzus make great kid pets, too. VERY lovable, and pretty sturdy for a small dog, good lap dog. If you have toddlers, I'd go with the Westie or the Shih tzu over the yorkie.
I agree with the posts above a yorkie isn't the best choice for children . They are a fragil little dog . children have a tendency to be rough and get excited . I have a pug and a westie which have been great with my older children but also wonderful with my 4 yr. old neice and 7 yr. old newfew. They can rough house and I don't worry about either one get hurt. BUT Pugs DO shed. If this does not bother you I manage to keep the shedding down with regular baths and brushing. My westies are Not big shedders but they do need regular hair cuts and grooming. Jubilee
