Hi! I am just doing a little research about showing dogs. I own Boston Terriers, and was wondering if anyone can tell me about showing dogs. I am completly ignorant about dog shows, but I desperatly want to learn! I have shown horses all my life until recently I had to quit because of health reasons, I think showing dogs would help fill the void.I have done research about the breed standards, and have a pretty good idea of what a good Boston looks like. At what age will I be able to tell if my puppies have what it takes? Also can anyone recommend any good web site or books that are strictly for dog show beginners? I would love to hear from anyone who shows their dog or just has a usful fact to add. I would just really like to learn more about this.
There are a few people on this forum who can answer that. Wait until you see Allie's name come up and bump the post, so she will see it. She can refer you to many books and sites on the web. Others here also know somethings.
The AKC web site has lots of useful information. Try the following link to get you started... http://www.akc.org/dic/events/conform/index.cfm?page=2 You can also use the AKC site to find dog shows in your area.... http://www.akc.org/dic/events/search/ Go to a dog show and talk to breeders in your area. There's nothing more valuable than a good mentor to get you started. I got into dog shows for the same reason that you mentioned. I'd grown up showing horses and livestock and dog shows have been a great way to get back into the show ring. Good luck! :)
