Now here's an idea that could revolutionize animal shelters. Furburbia is putting adoptable pets where people are-at the mall. The first of it's kind in the United States, the Furburbia adoption center in Salt Lake City's Cottonwood mall looks like a pet store. It sells pet supplies but it operates like a shelter. Adoption fees ($85-$95) cover vaccinations and spaying and neutering. And include a collar and leash for dogs or a plastic carrier for cats. Proceeds help homeless pets in Utah. Furburbia will also help you start an adoption center in your local mall. Checkout their website www.furburbia.com their E-mail adress is email@example.com Wow now that sure beats the heck out of the puppymill supporting pet stores! I think it's a great idea! And they operate just like an animal shelter so that there is no impulse buying.
Wow, that is awesome! I am trying to get room so I can house some rescued Schnauzers. I would love to do that! My best friend who works at our vet, they are always getting strays that people just drop off.
I have to agree, it seems to be the best of the best! How many folks end up with a puppy mill puppy because they saw "the doggie in te window" while at the mall? What a terrrific way to help fund themselves (selling pet supplies) and make homeless pets available to potential new "parents"!
that is an escellen tidea! other shelters should follow in their example- a problem with the shelters here are thet they are open funny hours like 12-5 three days, then...etc, adn they are so out of the way to get to in those bizarre hours. being in a mall or strip shopping center would be a great place for them to be!
That's really great! Putting shelter dogs where people will see them! I wonder if sometimes that is the only reason people end up with them from pet stores.. because they are already right there at the mall, convenience. Though this wouldn't be AS convenient, because of screening, but once you've seen and fallen in love with a dog, well, it's all over!
I don't know about you guys but where I live the Humane Society is a bit secluded and very dreary. I think every time I go in there if this place were a little happier and not so dank and dark and hidden they would have a much better chance of getting the animals adopted. Versus a bright cherry well lighted pets store conveniently placed right in the middle of the mall.
That is such a great idea! we should all start something like that together. There is a huge mall that is going up around here and I was thinking of starting a pet store with rescues at a cheaper price, what do you think? (dh will shoot me _ lalayla- get surgens ready to remove bullets from brain)
Actually Jessica I have a friend In Denver who is working on getting a Furburbia opened in the Cherry Creek Shopping center in Denver Co. Her shelter is expected to open in spring 2005. She sent me information on Furburbia some time ago. I have been following their special events which have been Super successful! I have checked into opening one where I live but I live in such a rural community that there really isn't a prime location.
Now that's a terrific idea! I live in Denver and I heard about furburbia opening in Cherry Creek but I didnt know what it was. I figured it was another overpriced department store. I will have to check it out when it opens.
