you said you are a moderator on other boards. can i ask you a few questions ? what are the rules of the other boards ? what judgement do you use when you decide to delete or lock a topic ? at what point in a controversial thread do you lock it up? why do you have to be thick skinned ?
I replied to your questions on the other thread...but yes we have rules...But they are just your basic everyday common sense ones. I guess you have to be alittle thick skinned to not let every little response thinking it is aimed at you...I'm mostly refering to this site on the "skin" issue. People here are more often going to attack a person for things they say if it doesn't go with their thoughts. Not all but quiet a few. We really don't have as many problems with the other sites...as far as topics getting out of control. I do think that it is because people know that if they are trouble makers....their posts will be gone. The final decision maker(s) are the ones that have to have a thick skin and not be afraid to get rid of things that aren't "nice".
As far as the aruging goes...we really don't have alot of it. When people start bashing and name calling, is when it should get locked. Locking and deleting are two different things. Alot of the information in the begining of most topics are educational is most ways....when we see a full flegged arugement...that isn't going to go anywhere but to keep it going...is when it will get locked. Not many are deleted. The older topics (1 yr old) are then put into a archive where they can be view but not added to. Buy having seperate topics...and the same question keeps getting asked by newbies...it can then be copied into a thread with those same questions and then you don't have the same question poping up all the time. It justs gets added. and the poster then sees a "moved to:" and can find where the post is.
if you lock a topic, who says someone just can't start another post with the same topic all over again? Not to put it down but people can be starting a "i hate this breed" 20 times and your whole day would be spent locking them down, why not just let it run its course and will die down sooner or later. (it always does)
Aisha: that is where the topics and search functions come into play....MOST people won't ask a question over and over if it is easy to find your answer. It also is nice to have the instant message to work...then the mods or admin. can let the person know where to find their answer on the board....it really isn't a matter of letting subjects get to the 10 + pages...that gets way out of control. There usually isn't any purpose to that. You can tell after a few pages if it is something someone really needed information about or if it is just there to cause a arugement. It is pretty obivious if we just read them....You need to stay on top of it to keep the troublemakers on their toes......
I know that but there are a lot of people who can't seem to let things go and when they find no one is interested on answering anymore they re-start the topic almost calling them on. It is funny to watch, but I agree it gets out of hand. I personally will just reply if of interest but when it gets out of control I just let others run the show, and sit back and watch. Instant messaging is a great thing and you should suggest that to admin. If it stays personal between two people then it is a great way to alert people of trolls or troublemakers before we get out of hand. I do not mind repeated questions of this forum because someone new always has new info that no one else has brought up, so just referring them to post #234 on such a day is not that great of an idea as far as i'm concerned. but all in all i must say that i do like the set up of this forum better then others. Instead of topic headings people can see what they have missed and what sounds interesting all my scrolling down.
I enjoy this forum but I would enjoy it more if there were more moderators. My most favorite forum is Auspet because of the way things are ran. There are plenty of mods and everyone respects each other and are able to debate in a mature manner. If things get out of control a moderator steps in gives a warning and may edit the posts which have gotten out of control. If it continues then the post is locked and any offensive posts are deleted. Trolls do not have a chance there. The longest I have seen a troll last there is a couple of hours. The search function to me is so important and really is an issue that needs to be resolved here. I frequent the fish forum there but there is also a Dog & Cat and Pit Bull forum.
Well, we don't get a lot of trolls here like we did anymore. A few months ago, 5 or 6 trolls were coming and Minni was offline, so we could do nothing but tolerate it. There hasn't been a troll sighting here in about a month. ---Allie the Chihuahua http://www.dogster.com/?41063 ---Mönica the Kitty http://www.catster.com/?57596
