GinaH, Thanks for the info. I had no idea. I have owened a rotti and always wanted a doberman, they are beautiful dogs. I know they have had bad reps too, and I knew some cities banned certain breeds, but I had no idea it was widespread enough to have a website. Thanks for the info I will check it out. I'm glad you brought it up. Katz, good point about being bit by a dog and not a breed.
Its so funny to me that people are "so they say" scared of certain breeds of dogs. I've been attacked by people but I've never been attacked by a dog. I just cant get over how the pit post's go on and on.... You dont have to like any breed if you so choose. Its you who is missing out on the best, that breed has to offer! I take no offence when someone says "Oh that's a doberman there mean" It just means fools like that wont ever own one! And that to is a GOOD THING.
Mls, Honestly, I was just trying to make a point. People do that too often. Black people are too often a target of racism, as are Pit bulls. That is why I used that in my analogy. I am not racist and I LOVE Pit bulls.
If you don't like pit's that fine. Hell, I don't like pickles. What I don't do, is spend every day telling anyone that will listen how bad pickles are when in fact, I know the reason I don't like pickles is because I had an allergic reaction and am now almost illogically scared to come anywhere near them. If you're scared of Pit's then how does reading pages after pages about them help you? How does posting it here, help you? What purpose could it possibly serve? I think the fact that you were bitten is horrible, and I woun't go as far as saying whether I believe it entirely or not (jury is still out) but if you dislike the dog, then dislike the dog and leave it at that.
Personally i have seen many more aggressive border collies than i have pits. Border collies teeter on the fence of excellent workers or a obessive neurotic possesive animals. and border collies have a natural preditory instinct much stronger than any pit i have seen (this is what makes the border collie an awsomw herding animal). I think pits and boder collies are both great breeds. but i think when you worry aboout everyone elses dog you forget about your dogs problems. my favorite dog in the whole world is the belgian malinios. a loyal, obedient, well built animal. but they can be nervous and snappy. and some down right mean. I only mention the malinois to prove that I do not have a biased view on dogs. I have a realistic view that all dogs are living, breathing, emotional animals and all are capable of being wel tempered to psycho. this additude of breed being the problem continues to allow bad owners to own dogs and bad breeders continuing to breed them. it is no suprise that pits are in the news more often than a lot of other dogs. THERE ARE MORE OF THEM! they are a popular dog. same thing happened with the rotti, german shepard,dobie...wait till enough labordoodles get out there and start making the papers.
Katz: I was being facetions. Often when we talk about blacks it is they are the target of racism. Whites are too is my point as is everyone else. We all are judged as are the pits. Our society is to darn judgmental. If you don't own one have never had dealings with a pit why judge them and if you have been bitten by a pit why say it is all pits. No, it is not all pits it is only the one that bit you. It really is sad the negative preoccupation with pits. I wonder if they spend as much time thinking about us as we do them?
Border Collie Babe-- Remember the thread you posted earlier this week , "Calling all pit owners?" I can't find it now but you told us how you hated to break it to us but that you just don't like pit bulls. A few of us responded, mostly politely... I told you that nobody said you have to like pit bulls, and gave you some advice there about how to make friends and how not to on this board..... which you didn't listen to, apparently.... Anyway, after I few posts, you said "Just kidding! I was bored and I knew this would get some responses," or something very close to that. Most of us said no problem, and now here you are again, same story... so is it a joke this time too? Because it was maybe excusable once, but if you are going for reaction AGAIN, none of your posts have any credibility in my eyes. Heck, I guess you're getting the attention you wanted. Woohoo!
Yes, GinaH, maybe there were not enough of us on the other night to get the desired reaction. It WAS really late. Sad thing is that she could tell funny stories about her own dog, post pictures of it, tell us what activities it likes to do, etc. and get NICE responses from the same people whose negative reaction she seems to love so much. After all most of us are at a site called Terrificpets because we love dogs. Hey, I even gave her a link to a border collie forum, where she wouldn't have to look at our scary pits and tremble and shake and not sleep well at night. Even here, there are so many owners of other non-terrifying breeds that she could learn about, like Maltese and Pomeranians.
I just saying that SOME of these dogs arent safe and SOME people dog care as much as they should i realy dont like how SOME people say that all pits are great and freindly when their not. Their should be some more info to people saying that not all pits are safe before i way bitten i though every dog would never bite but they do even a lab would. YOU CAN NEVER BE SAFE WITH ANY DOG. Or even a cat. Thier is all ways a risk with anything. So you cant keep say that all pits are great and they dont hurt anyone what would have happen if my mum had read that when i was little and got a pit and it bit me. So all i am saying is that no dogs or cats or watever are safe
Count thanks ,good reply, and lastly to add my 2 APBT make awsome family pets and are as safe and well adjusted as any socialized dog.Yes any dog can bite, and there's always a bad seed with any breed. You can't blame one bite on a whole breed then demonize a breed for one bite. Stop with your propaganda please.
I got the skinny on border collie babe. she is 13. no 13 and a half. I am so sorry. I thought you were an adult. we all know how dangerous a dog like a pitbull can be. but in the world of the dog, It's not really popular to bash a breed. a lot of the media hypes stories up about dogs that attack and the pitbull is it's favorite target. this is how they sell newspapers and get you to watch the evening news. Don't believe everything you read or hear. get the other side of the story before making a judgement. i say all of this with great kindness.
Border-Collie-Babe...........Actually you did not say at the beginning "Some dogs aren't safe." It would be better if you had. I do not think that anyone has said that all Pit Bulls are any other breed are always great, rather that it depends on the dog and the owner or trainer. I do not think any puppy is born mean. No matter what your age, you had to have know what you said was going to offend the pit bull owners. Quite honestly I think this topic has put you center stage, and that was your goal. Now, Count..............Let's talk about those pickles. Is it dill, sweet, relish or just pickles as a group? What about cucumbers?
Gunny........I always thought Border Collies were real gentle and sweet. I actually knew nothing about a breed, until I saw a show on the local educational channel about them. They are not always as I thought.
