My husband bought a puppy from a pet store and we were told she was a jack russell but several people have asked if she is a rat terrier. I just don't know she looks like she could be either breed. HELP?
I am a computer illiterate and don't know how to post a picture. The papers that we got say jack russell but she isn't regitered and when I called the pet store and left a message about this they never retuirned my calls.
I suggest you look it up on the internet....you can go to the AKC site and check out both dogs and see which one you pup looks like....you might have to wait till it is older to figure it out....but does it really matter? They are both of the terrier breed and will have alot of the same traits.....you can alway say it is a terrier mix.....
Most Rat Terriers have longer legs than Jack Russels. Also most Rat Terrier's ears stand up after they are grown, most Jack Russel's don't. Also the price you paid for your dog could also make a big difference. Rat Terriers are usually a lot cheaper than JR's, most Rats sell from about 60-150 dollars. most JR's are 350 or up for even unregistered dogs.
I am a breeder of Rat Terriers. I currently own 6 of the little buggers. Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between a JRT and a Rat Terrier. Rat Terriers come in a variety of colors, including solid colors such as blk/tan, choc/tan, red etc etc. All rats do not have erect ears, as a matter of fact only two of my dogs ears are erect. I prefer the button ears myself. JRT's are usually 90% white, have button ears, come in three variety of coats, smooth, broken, and rough. The biggest difference IMO is the personality. My Rats are more ppl lovers (no offence intended to JRT owners). My Rats are on my lap when I am on the couch and under the covers at night. I can take them walks on the farm and they stay with me and come back when I call them. I also do agility with my dogs and they are very quick learners. JRT's IMO tend to be a little more of a challenge. They were bred to go to ground and hunt and have lots of drive. Sure wish you could post a pic.
