Just wanted to share a little story that made me so mad yesterday. Even though I have a large fenced in yard I still take 4 of my dogs on 4 walks everyday. I don't take the oldest 2 because they just can't do it anymore. In any case my youngest puppy is a doberman, possibly mixed with lab. Yesterday we passed this man who was walking his mini schnauzer. Tucker always barks at other dogs. He's getting better about it an we're working on it but he always tries. I give him a firm no and he stops. That is what happened yesterday. This man says is that a doberman. I said yeah, possibly mixed but we're not positive. He says well keep that dog away from me. I said excuse me? He said I don't trust them, keep him away from me and my dog. I said he's the sweetest dog ever (he really is) and besides that he's only a baby. He's only 4 and a half months old. He said yeah thats what they always say just keep him away. Than here's what really made me mad. He looked over at my kids and he said I sure wouldn't have one with kids. Some kind of mother you are. I said excuse me? I was so unbelievable angry. By this time he was already passed me and silly me just let it go. I am so mad at myself for it but I had the 4 dogs and my kids and I couldn't say what I felt and wanted to say with my kids there. I hope I pass him again on the weekend when my husbands home and my kids are with him. Its one thing to mess with my dogs but when you mess with my dogs AND my kids.... That makes me angry. I was so livid. I just sat and steamed the whole rest of the day yesterday. I've always heard stories like this from other people but I've never been a victim of it. Some people are just ignorant. I really think its awful that some dog owners aren't better educated on dog breeds. They just own a dog to have one. They have no idea about the personality of their dog or other dogs. There just "dogs" to some people and thats it. The dog world would be a much happier place if people were better educated.
Grrrrrrr, I am familiar with THAT scenario! I know how infuriating it is. Bad enough that they assume that kind of stuff, but man, the nerve it must take to actually say it to another person. I'm sorry you had to deal with that kind of jerk. I have become somewhat used to that kind of rudeness, but it still makes me angry. I have given up on trying to educate that kind of person and to prove to them that my dog (who is standing there toungue lolling, tail wagging) is not the criminal that he imagines she is.
i have never had an encounter like that with anyone but growing up with shepherds and working in the animal field i am always having to defend the gsd from co workers and others who have the same feelings towards them. i have never though gotten so defensive about it. i just figure everyone has their opinion and if they have never experinced what a wonderfully bred and socialized gsd can be like then there isn't much i am going to say to change their minds. as much as i love this breed to be honest i am hesitant always when one walks thru the door of work. in my opinion the breed has earned its bad reputation, whether thru bad owners or breeders it doesn't much matter. it is however nice to work on one who isn't muzzled to the hilt, and being a royal p i a . only a good owner of a great dog knows what i am talking about and to h*ll with everyone else.
oh my, do i ever know how you feel. i'll be walking sandy, and some little kids will stop to pet her and the parents will be all fine. then when someone asks what breed she is the parents freak and tell their kids to get away because she's "vicious" ( for those of you who don't know sandy is an APBT)
I know the feeling too. I have a very sweet lab/pit mixed puppy. Everyone loves her until they ask the breed and I get to the pit part. I would say about 75% of people back away and the rest always have something nice to say. As far as I'm concerned...that's still 25% of people who love Bella anyway. The rest are just gonna miss out because of thier stupidity.
