The best way to take care of a tick is to dip a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and place that over the tick for a few moments. It will fall off dead and whole. :) It sounds like you aren't using tick prevention, huh? DEFINITEY look into starting her on Frontline. Ticks carry nasty illnesses.
You can also cover the tick on the area of the dog where the tick is.. with vasoline, it will smother the tick. When removing one its best to twist it out of the skin to ensure you also remove the head. Its when they are engorged that is gross......full of blood. The ticks to worry about are the size of pinhead if that, very small dark brown, all this tick will do it bite and leave the host' They are the ones who carry the Lyme.
We really don't have any ticks here. I'm sure that it came from the track with her. Of course, now I will have to check all the dogs. All of my animals are on sentinel for fleas and heartworms. Lady has her first vet appointment on Friday and greyhounds are not allowed to be on any type of preventatives while racing, which she did up until a couple of weeks ago. Not even for heartworms, the reason for this, because believe me I was stunned, is that the meds can cause the drug tests to show up positive and the dogs won't be able to race. Anyway, she goes in Friday to get her stitches out and get on the preventatives. Hoosgow, where do you get that stuff? Is it for people or is it at a petstore? I've never heard of it thanks. And please don't get the idea my dogs aren't on any prevention. The only reason Lady hasn't already been started is because she was racing. Thanks, Gina
EMT gel, imagine a "gel" that will dry and stick similar to superglue that has antibiotics and collogen (to promote healing and blood clotting) in it. My field dogs get cut up on a regular bsis and i treat them all the same way. 1. direct pressure to stop bleeding if necessary. 2. rinse well with betadine, 3. stich or stape if necessary (rare but it happens) 4. pat dry a bit and coat with EMT gel. let the gel dry (a couple of minutes depending on how wet the wound is). if it is minor, i stop there, if it is more major i will then cover with a nonstick sterile gauze, wrap with vet wrap then cover that with duct tape. EMT gel is available through sporting dog supply places, i prefere lion country supply. www.lcsupply.com around $14 for a one ounce tube and worth 10 times that much. seals, heals, disinfects all in one.
Ewww. I agree with evryone ticks are nasty. I hate pulling them off my dogs. I dont use frontline or advantage because they dont keep the ticks off. They dont do a very good job with fleas either. When i pull ticks off i flush them down the toilet.
Thanks mls. Everything is fine. Thanks for asking. Actually today has been a big breakthrough. Lady and Rusty actually played together a little and I have found no more disgusting ticks. Well, I'm going to watch the presidential debate. Exciting I know, and my mind is already made up, but I want to see what they have to say this time.
i use epistop to stop bleeding like that, and if we have none of that, i use flour. i asked my vet one time, becasue sandy was bitten, and she was bleeding a bit, he told me to just use the epistop stuff. and as for pulling the tick off, i have no clue, sorry!
