What do they do at cat shows? Is it like a dogs bench show where they are mainly on display? are they examined by a judge? (I would assume they do), Arew they walked around a ring? We have one coming up at my hometown and thought about going to see it. LTLGTO
I'm not a big fan of cats, but their are some gorgeous breeds. I just can't imagine a cat walking around a ring and stacking like they do with dogs. They'd look up at the crowd and say "Whata Ya Lookin' At!" ltlgto
MLS, Oh do take pic's! When I went years ago, they would put each cat up on a table and the judge would look the cat over like they do dogs. They also pick the cat up and strech it out...with thier hands under the front and back legs. They strech the cat out oblong. I dont know why they do this? It was years ago, but I do remember it was intresting. So many cats I had never seen befor.
nah, they don't walk them around a ring. could you imagine ? it would be more like dragging them around the ring:) i went to 1 about 15 yrs ago at madison square garden. they were all in cages everywhere and when they were judged the judge picked them up and stretched them out real long.
Harleygirl described a cat show pretty well. :-) I used to breed and show Persian cats. There are typically 6 rings in a one day cat show. Each breed is judged separately as well as color and sex of the same breed. In other words, all bi-color Persians would be judged in one ring, and solids in another. It takes 6 ribbons of best of breed to champion your cat who is 6 (or 8 ?) months or older. If you are lucky you can champion a cat in a one day show. Then some are brought back as champions to more shows to achieve their grand champion status. Obviously I used to be a cat geek! LOL!! These shows were exausting starting very early in the morning and going on until 5 or 6 pm. Most of your time is spent waiting between rings, trying to keep your cat happy in his/her cage and maintain their coat for the next ring. It is alot of work and each show costs between $60 and $100 to enter per cat, whether you get ribbons or not. They are fun to go to as a spectator though!! :-)
CassidyGirl: I have so many questions. Persians are my favorite breeds. I want an Exotic Shorthair soo bad. I am going to the catshow this weekend. What do you think of the Exotic Shorthair? Do you prefer dollface (traditional) or extreme Persians? Why did you stop breeding? Do you know a breeder you would recommend for the Exotic Shorthair (solids preferred) Why is it so difficult to find solid Exotics? and FINALLY Why do some colors only come in one gender? (I know genetically but it is so strange to me). I mean chocolate dogs can be boys or girls for example. Oh one last one Why is it so difficult to find a black exotic or persian AND Why is it so difficult to find a white odd-eye? I love this cat! I am so glad you posted. Yippeee...
Hi Mls2004, It's funny, I almost didn't respond to the topic because I knew the old "cat freak" in me would come out! LOL!! I love Exotics which are basically short haired Persians, just without all of the high maintenance of the long coat. I DEFFINATELY prefer an extreme face to a doll face. I used to get emails from perspective pet owners requesting a doll face when the reallity is that a doll face is a pet quality Persian or Exotic...something you hope not to produce at all. The one benefit to the doll face is that the more extreme the kitty the more likely you will have problems with upper respiratory infection or runny eyes causing those yucky tear stains. It's really just a personal preference though. I have been out of the cat fancy for too long to reccomend a breeder, sorry. You are right, some colors of cats are only one gender like calicos and patched tabbies are always female, although rarely you will hear about a male calico...but this is considered a defect. I was surprised to hear that solid black is hard to find. I had a blue cream (also only female color) who I bred to my black/wht male and had 3 solid black males. All three were gorgeous show quality boys, but I sold two as pets and gave one away free at 3 months due to the fact that no one seemed to want that color at the time. Odd eyed cats are very rare and some people go crazy over them, some, like me, don't. I think it looks weird. I have a friend who has a blue and white odd eyed male Persian who at one time was wated by many breeders due to the odd eyes being even more rare in bi-colors. He has sired a few litters but has not yet thrown an odd-eyed baby. I hope this has answered some of your questions. :-) Oh yea, I stopped breeding because I had to move to a small appartment for a year and had no room. I felt like the crazy cat lady with the 6 cats and 15 kittens running around. Two of my breeding cats went to breeders who I trust and the others went yto loving pet homes free of charge. You may be able to find an Exotic kitten or at least a breeder that you like at the cat show. Some breeders rent an extra cage just for kittens for sale. Good luck and have a great time!!!! :-)
Cassidy: You rock! Very informative. I love the exotic but I don't want the too extreme.. I just love the cubby fur.. they are so pretty. It is hard to tell from web pages who is legit.. and I once went to a lady's house who told me this ridiculous story that her obviously doll face kittens would as they grew older GROW INTO their extreme faces. Yeah, o.k. Her house stunk to high heaven (even though she lived in an exclusive gated condo community) and she was quite strange. She has $3000 maltese boarded up where you could not see them BUT you could hear them. she was strange.. I left and was very upset I drove so far to be disappointed. She made me uncomfortable. She stated the kittens were unsocial and acting crazy because they rarely come downstairs. Yeah, I could tell. They would not sit still long enough to be held and generally were ticked off. They were hissing and fussing with each other. I was so upset. I had the money to pay and everything. I have searched all the shelters but they won't ship and they are so picky. Most are breeder castaways that have been abused. It is so sad. I have been to a dog show and they were weird. Not very friendly and extremely viciously competitive. It was creepy. Competition definitely brings out the worse. Thank you SO MUCH for responding. I love the solids. They are very very difficult to find. The tabbies and calicos seem to be popular now. The only white I love is the odd eye. And I love the blue white and creamy pink color exotic or the blue white. Gorgeous. I would kill for a chocolate or black one too but there are waiting lists a mile long for them. Some people like the light colors like cream. I love anything dark. Thank you again. I appreciate you taking the time to give me the information. I have read almost everything on the internet about them.
Mls2004, You are SOOOOOO RIGHT about the people at the shows. I am very down to earth and just could not relate to the back stabbing and just rudeness in the cat fancy which is another reason I stopped breeding. I know there are some breeders who make you feel as though you have to be worthy to have one of their kittens. I NEVER made anyone feel as though my kittens were too good for them. Very strange. Probably why I am happier now with just my two Yorkies who are more than likely not show quality and are spayed and neutered. My sweet little pets who I adore. You were right to leave that kitty mill home. YUCK!!! You do NOT want an unsocialized kitten. As far as the nose length, in some lines the nose actually will go up with age...but not from a complete doll face. Also, the body should be short and cobby. Please share a picture when you finally do find your kitty!! :-)
Cassidy: Well, I am honored you came from behind your previous breeding shell and answered my questions. Thank you again. I don't know, I have issues with dog breeders maybe because I have been so attached to dogs for so so long and to see the purebreds languishing away while somebody breeds them it really ticks me off. You honestly do not see that many purebred kittens in the shelter. And when you do they are snatched up quite quickly. But to go to petfinder.org and see the purebred rotts, parson jackRT's, cockers, greyhounds, pekingnese (which there a lot of now), shepherds, hounds, it is really disgusting. And oh my gosh, the amount of pits in the shelter is just an epidemic. There is no excuse for anyone to contribute to this epidemic. I just simply have no tolerance for it. It is truly sad. I wish I could start a consortium where a 100 people put in money and bought acreage and just housed the dogs. Got them spayed/neutered and they just lived out their years. I stopped looking at petfinder.org for awhile because I really began to hate human beings. I actually am afraid of cats. The exotic is the only want that does not scare me. I think because it's face is not intimidating and tiger like. I will let you know about the cat show. I am preparing to be rejected. Those places always have society rejects people who can't get along with others. I mean they are competing viciously for a RIBBON! Yeah, society rejects: that's why I am going! LOL!
Mls2004, That was well said regarding the exibitors at the shows! I have two Persian breeder friends who actually envy the fact that I am no longer breeding or showing, almost as though they are in some sort of cult and cannot get out. Weird!! Most shelters/pounds will not take the Persians or purebread cats for some reason. They will turn you away and have you contact Persian rescue. I always had people writing me (I used to have a web site) asking if my adults were available. Ultimately thses are the forever homes my adults ended up in. Oddly enough I paid more for my Persians than I have on my Yorkies. Anywhere from $800 to $2,500 is what I paid. YIKES!!! Ok, back to dogs...I agree about the Pits at the pound. It is so very sad. I had actually thought about breeding Yorkies when I bought my first one then I decided that I had been there, done that with the cats. I am leaving the breeding to the people who know what they are doing as far as bettering the breed etc... Well have fun and do NOT let the exibitors get to you. Just be glad that you are not one of them. :--)
