I am in need of introducing a 3 year old dog (german Shepherd mix) to my current 5 cats. (indoor only cats) I have had the dog in the house for about two weeks but in separate rooms and sharing time with both. But how can I get them to be able to sleep in the same bedroom with me? The dog gets anxious to see the cats and sometimes wines or barks at underneath the door of the room they are in. I tried to introduce them only once with the dog on a leash and the cats, of course, hiss and swipe at him as he barks at them. But the barks don't seem to be of an anger manor. So.... please help. I want to be able for all of us to sleep in the same bed. Well.... the same room at least. Thanks.
I don't know much about cats, but have you tried putting your pup in a crate where the cats can check him out but neither can get hurt? My best guess. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. first off, welcome to TP! i would try what Gina suggested, and put the dog in a crate and allow the cats to go up to him, and sniff him. then once the cats get used to your dog that way you can try introducing them without the crate. i would suggest just trying one cat at a time. have the cat your introducing in a seperate room thats large, and has somewhere for the cat to hide. bring the dog into the room, and sit back and supervise very closely. let them sniff and get to know each other, and if the cat gets too scared at least he can run and hide, and if your dog chases him, you'll be there to stop him. try this a couple of times, with all of the cats....just dont try all the cats at once i would feel very bad for the dog. this is what i did when i introduced sandy to mittens, and then how i introduced her to patches and two-tone. so, best of luck, and let us know how things go!
