Any info would be great I don;t feel our vet is being completely homest. Mindy my Shish was rushed to the vets office cause she was vomiting with blood present. After xrays and blood test she's been diagnosed with pancreatitis! She's currently staying over night at the office and being givin' fluids through IV. They are supposed to call in the morning with an update. Anyone here had or have a dog with this ? what are her odds of she does make it through the night and is able to hold food down. I know that it can be reaccureing and theres no cure. Any first hand info would be great ! Lisa PS forgive my typos my fingers are faster than my brain

I hope your little dog gets well soon Im really sorry she's so ill please keep us posted. This is a short definition of Pancreatitis in canines. **Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas resulting from an obstruction of the pancreatic duct. It can result from a viral infection, abdominal injury, obesity, poor nutrition and the use of some drugs.**
With IV fluid and nothing by mouth for awhile to rest the GI tract, the pancreatitis should settle down. How old is your doggie? And yes, I have read several times that one really high fat meal can trigger a bout of pancreatitis in some dogs.
QUOTE : **Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas resulting from an obstruction of the pancreatic duct. It can result from a viral infection, abdominal injury, obesity, poor nutrition and the use of some drugs.* Mindy is not overweight and her nutrition is great on no drugs , has no obstruction the xrays show that and has no abdominal injury. The sheet doc gave us says Acute Pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas. It is a serious condition that occurs mostly in overweight ( not her) , Middle Aged ( she's a senior), female dogs. It causes pain, vomiting, depression, and sometimes shock and death. Oh she's 12 years old. Gets NO table food. Our baby girl I think has lived a very full life and well .................we will see what the verdict is in the morning. Thanks yall
most cases of pancreatitis can be handled with iv fluids, hetastarch, some pepcid, pain medication , small amounts of food, like a tsp. mixed with water 4 times daily. but bland food like i/d or en. if she doesn't seem like she is getting better after 1-2 days on iv's then i would suggest an ultrasound to rule out pancreatic cancer. we have had several cases in work over the past 3 weeks and all made it but 1. she had been let go for so long by her owner that what we needed to do to save her, her owner wouldn't go for. high fat meals, raiding the garbage can, anything she eats that she is not used to can set it off. we generally see it alot around thanksgiving becaus eeveryone gives their dogs turkey and other things to eat from the turkey day dinner. best wishes for her.
hi yall I am also "LoveMySHZU" The vet kept mindy for a day on fluids and sent her home with us on thursday 14th. she wouldn't eat or drink . and kept vomiting. So friday mnorning we took her back. Doc said I want to keep her for 5 days on fluids and you guys come by and try feeding her cottage cheese each day. we agreed. Saturday I went to see her and they told me they couldn't get her to eat. I went back to her kennel and she was in realllllllllllllllly poor shape. In so much pain she couldn't stop graoning. I ask doc" have you taken another blood test?" he said not yet. I said she's worse I can tell please run the test. I spent a few more minutes with her trying to calm her but she wasn't having it. It broke my heart seeing her hurting like that. I went home and when dear hubby got there I said " go now!" go see our baby she's hurting so much. He gets there and is pissed. Ask the doc if he ran the test I ask for doc says not yet. DH said run it now and call me in an hour. So he calls in an hour and results show she's had no change but is now bleeding internally. !!!!! suggest a blood transfusion ! I SAID NO WAY ! how much more do you want to milk us for. I said my goodbyes to her please just let her sleep! So we had to put her down. The transfusion wasn't a fix anyhow. I'm very lost without her. I lost my 10 year pal my watch dog my cuddle buddy when hubby is out to sea. I don;t let that stop me with loving our new Boston. Guess God blessed me with him knowing that Mindy didn't have much longer. We allowed doc to take a sample of her pancreaus so we can see if we were possibly dealing with cancer that just suddenly got worse. When he went in all her insides were swollen. Her intestines were swollen SHUT ! As soon as we get the results I'll let you know. I blame myself at this point for giving her a bone ( digestible one) it was small and she ate the whole thing day or so later she was vomiting. I pray I'm not the cause of her suffering. Thanks Yall'
