Hi all, My pit bull was just diagnosed with giardia and was given some antibiotic tablets. It appears as though he's learned not to swallow when I put pills in the back of his mouth. Now, when I give him these meds, he just spits them back out again. The problem is, the tablets virtually disintegrate during this process. Does anybody have good tips on administering big pills?
If you want to put them in the mouth, you need to shove them over the back of his tongue with your middle finger and massage his throat and keep his head tilted up while you do all this. Dogs hate it but get them used to it, those pills can be terribly bitter. I always talk while I'm doing it. OOOPen...OK swallow, mmm,OK is it gone?(check mouth for pill) OH Boy Goood Dog...
I know this might sound cruel, but it's the only way my one dog will take a pill. We have to hold her mouth open WIDE, shove the pill as far back as possible, then hold her muzzle closed and blow in her face and massage her throat. I always feel terrible doing it but there's no other choice. She always get a treat afterwards though!! :)
Missy takes 4 Phenobarbitol pills every day. I put them in her food bowl with the dry food and she never notices. I know someone who puts pills inside hot dogs. Her potassium Bromide is made by a compound pharmacy and they are actually dog treats! Liver flavored. Now how cool is that? Hope your doggie is feeling better soon!
i put pearl's meds in her food, too, and she doesn't even know it's there. if i have to give one directly to her i put it in a big piece of cheese and get her all excited over it and don't give it to her at first then open her mouth and throw it in, she swallows it as fast as she can, and wants more.
