I am really looking in to getting a flat coated retriever and I was wondering if anyone out there had any first hand info or second hand for that matter. I have been recently researching these dogs and they seem to fit into my lifestyle... Just wondering if anyone can throw anything useful at me!
Hi, welcome to the board. I have a golden, but I haven't heard of a flat coated retriever. I really didn't know there was such a thing. Tell me what you've read, I'd like to know. Have a good day! What's the difference in a retriever and flat coated retriever? I mean other than the obvious of course! Have a good day! That is exactly what I have been hearing about them... very good family dogs, friendly, easily trained. They look like a black golden retirever, long black hair. Really gracious dogs, and they say that they are pretty quiet indoors as well, so they would do fine in an condo/apartment as long as they get outdoor excercise as well.
Originally it was when they crossed a 'water dog' (lab) with an irish setter. It excels in everything that retrievers do,swimming, sense of smell, excellent bird dogs... and the coat i believe (not 100% sure) is like the goldens.
they are really really puppies for years, that happy bouncy active active puppiness, so they need a lot of exercise to not go nutty and get in to everything. they have the retreiver personality of happy, friendly, trainable, love people, bouncy, chewy and mouthy. there is a lot of cancer in the breed so they are not as long lived as a golden or a lab.
Thank you for the info.... It seems that this breed would be a good match for me, but the only thing is I cant find a good breeder around where Im from (connecticut) and I am a big advocate of resucing dogs. So im not sure what I am going to do at this point!
