Well, I don't know. I have no idea how much he ate. He got up and went to the door to go outside and got sick this time, so maybe if he's able to go to the door he knows it's coming. Maybe it's getting better. (I know I'm rationalizing) I had him drink a bunch of water as soon as he came back in. He seems fine except all the sudden he just gets sick. If you didn't know he was throwing up you wouldn't know anything was wrong.
i looked up the MSDS sheet for charcoal briquettes on humans and it said gastrointestinal upset, but not really dangerous. and these were ashes, not like a whole hard brick. he's already throwing up, so i guess i'd feel safe making sure he has water. it did say to make someone throw up.
Water will keep him throwing up. I would continue giving water as long as black stuff is coming out. When the vomit is just watery or bile, but no black, then stop giving him water, and see if he goes to sleep.
Thank you Pearl. I was getting frantic. He's sleeping now and seems fine. Hopefully he got it all out of his system. I will keep an eye on him. I really appreciate you finding that for me, it really eases my mind. When my husband wakes up tomorrow, I'm going to smack him. I can't believe he left that out in the back yard! Anyway, I'm going to start my "watch Rusty vigil." I think I'll sleep on the couch. :) Thanks again everyone, and Pearl thanks for finding that for me.
He's still sleeping. He seems ok now. I think he got rid of most of it. I swear I think he threw up the whole BBQ pit! I am just checking back in. I will show up as on as long as I am on the computer because I have this board open on road runner and I am using AOL to do other stuff. So if I don't answer right away that's why. Anyway, thanks for asking. I think he's going to be ok, now my husband, I don't know, he may need some help after I get through with him. He left the ashes in a bucket in the back yard. He usually takes them out and bags them and throws them in the trash, I don't know why he left them there today, but I can promise he won't do it again! LOL
"Should I give him something?" Give him some pupkin and rice, maybe a bit of boiled chicken (unseasoned & unsalted). Be sure that he is drinking plenty of clean water and watch to see how uch he's throwing up and what consistency it is, as well as what is in it. For now it's best that he's throwing it up. If you feel at any time you need to induce vomiting, syrup of ipecac (one teaspoonful per ten pounds body weight);2. Hydrogen peroxide 3% (one to three teaspoonfuls every ten minutes; repeat three times); Info from: http://www.doctordog.com/dogbook/dogvomit.html
Thank you everyone. He threw up a few more time last night, but now all the ash is gone from it. The last couple of times were just a little and were like foamy and no ash or black tint. He wanted to eat this morning, so I'm watching him now, hopefully it will stay down and all will be fine. As for the carpet. It's a 5X8 area rug I got at Walmart for my study and it is now trash. At least it was less than 100.00. I don't think I'm even going to try and clean it, it's just like pure black charcoal after I wiped it up I guess I rubbed it in. It would probably cost me almost as much to buy a new one as it would to have it cleaned. A couple of weeks ago Kohl's had all their area rugs 1/2 price. Maybe I'll get lucky. Thanks for asking and thanks for the info. Frosty I didn't see yours until this morning. I am going to put that link in my favorites. I am so tired, I think I slep about 4 hours total and that was all split up, I'm going to read through and see what's going on and try to go back to bed. Ha, this is Ariel's happy play time :).
be easy on your husband. who would think a dog would eat a bucket of ashes !! i mean yuck !! what in the world would attract him to eat it. anyway i am glad he is a bit better. maybe give him some pepto bismol liquid if its been awhile since he has vomited. or even kaopectate. it will soothe his stomach lining. hold off on food for at least 12 hours from his last vomiting episode. and give him ice cubes instead of water so he doesn't dehydrate but takes water in slowly. if he proceeds to keep vomiting have him seen or at least call poison control. it is about 45 dollars for the consult.
SCOUT!!!!! Where were you last night???? I already fed him....He is drinking ok and I thought that would keep him from being dehydrated. Will it not???? Also, I thought about giving him Pepto, but I don't know how much. On the bottle it is in human age, but no weight is listed. Do you know???? Oh great fountain of knowledge, please answer me back :)
has he vomited since you fed him ? i think if he doesn't continue to vomit, just feed him bland foods for a day or two. as long as he is keeping everything down that is good. if he does vomit don't feed him and just give him ice cubes. whenever i have had vomiting myself, i know i am thirsty as heck and i drink and then guess what ? it all comes back up. ice cubes wil allow him to take in neccessary fluids but at a slower and easier rate for his stomach. for a golden, use what they recommend for an adult dosage. wait an hour or so after he was fed breakfast so his system doesn't get overloaded. bland food may also be a good idea because he may have horrendous diarrhea from the ashes. i have never heard of a dog who would eat ashes so i doubt i would have been much help to you last night. sounds like pearl and lalayla gave you all the advice you needed. another golden and lab trait. they will eat anything not nailed down :)
Hey Aisha, I am just waiting for everyone to calm down after playing and then I will try to get some sleep. That will be about the time the kids wake up! Rusty is the only golden I've ever had and I have never had a problem with him eating things before. Ha, I bet he doesn't do it again. I dont' know about other golden's and maybe it's because he was rescued from death row, but the worst thing he's ever chewed on is himself and he really only eats food. At least until now.
Thanks Scout. I was wondering about the pepto. I will keep any eye on him. He's asleep after his morning run around the yard. He didn't sleep much last night either. He hasn't gotten sick again, but it hasn't been all that long either. No diarrhea, yet. Thank God. I see what you mean about the ice. That makes perfect since. I know water usually makes my stomach feel worse when I'm sick too. I can't believe he ate them either. Yuck. I didn't yell at my husband, but I still wanted to. He said the ashes are what he took out of the bottom of the pit before he put the new charcoal in last night. So they had been sitting a couple of days. I know we had burgers on Monday I guess it was, so he probably thought he was eating hamburger meat, the big dufus.
Gina, Hi. I have a Golden also. He is 14 years old and a wonder guy. His name is Rusty also. I would be worried about all that throwing up myself. I hope he is doing alright. Can you call an emergencie office today and just ask? I wish him the best. Let us know how he is.
Gina, I know that a lot of Golden retrievers eat anything in sight. We would babysit one and the things that she would eat were crazy. Even the brush for the b.b.q once, you know the ones with the steel brush ? Crazy thing. But she had a stomach of a horse. Once in it never came up again. lol.
Well, just wanted to tell you all thanks and that Rusty is back to his regular self. I am exhausted and feel crappy today, but he is fine! I was up until almost 3:00, then at 5am someone rings the doorbell. They toilet papered our house, oh the joys of having a high school aged daughter. Didn't get back to sleep until 6am, and then at 8:30 the dogs were barking to go outside and be fed. Stayed up with them until 10 and went back to sleep until 2. Watch my beloved Dallas Cowboys lose :( and am now playing catch up on everything else! So, thanks for all your help. What a night!
