simple and funny- test your dog's persistence... the test is: show them a treat, place it under a towel (or wrap it up loosely inside a towel) and see how long they will work to get it out. we tried it. i showed them both yum-yum-bacon treats, and then wrapped them up in a dish towel on the floor. snoopy sniffed, walked away. snowball sniffed, and didnt give up till she got the bacon. snoop waited till she got it, and then stole hers. so who's smarter? how do your guys do? it's a fun 5 or so minutes to watch- try it!
Lilly knows that if Duncan does all the work, which he will, she doesnt stand a chance. They will both work very hard at getting a treat from wherever it is hidden. I would have to say she is smarter since Duncan hasnt realised she will get it out and he can steal it from her. It is quite entertaining to watch them.
Our Standard Poodle puppies have this type of test done during Temperment Testing at 7 week. The tester gives them a little piece of food. She then takes the food and places it in an upside down plastic margarine tub with a small 1" x 1" hole cut out of the side so they can smell it. She then gets their attention to smell the food under the tub. The persistent ones have the stronger food drives. Pretty interesting! ltlgto
It is part of the Temperment Test that our stud owner uses. I don't know if there is a specific standardized test. Different testers use different forms of testing. Almost all tests include food drive, food aggression tests. Hers is for food drive (trainability using bait). You probably wouldn't do a retrieve instinct test (retrieving a bird wing) on a toy breed though. ltlgto
