Please don't think I am stupid but do dogs get colds? As you all know I got Winston a few weeks ago at 5 weeks. The last couple of days he seems as though he may have a bit of a cold. Has coughed 2x in like 3 days but seems to spray a little liquid from his nose when you are holding him. His personality has not changed and he is still an active little pup. I have not taken him anywhere he could contract anything because my vet is coming tomorrow to give him his first vaccinations. But because mom rejected the litter at 4 weeks this could make his immune system not as strong as it should be right? So will the vet give him his shots if he has a cold? I am really not stupid just never had a dog who seemed to have a cold.
I would keep him around and in blankets most of the day, if it is chilly out. Dogs can get their own type of "cold," where they feel "blah." ---Allie the Chihuahua http://www.dogster.com/?41063 ---Mönica the Kitty http://www.catster.com/?57596
Because he is so young we wrap him up at nap times and he loves being our baby. Also doesn't help that there is snow outside now and he gets so cold just going potty. So when we bring him in we wrap him up to get warm again. I hope this helps him. Like I said does not act sick but seems to have a cold. I will talk to the vet when she comes tomorrow
dogs can get upper respiratory infections. his immune system may be weak due to the circumstances of his mom leaving them at 4 weeks. a vet will not and should not give a puppy or any animal vaccines while they are sick. he may have kennel cough if he is coughing. antibiotics and robitussin dm if its kennel cough should clear it up. definitely do not allow him near any other dogs, or doggie places until he has had at least 3 sets of shots.
