Does anyone have any experiences with Whippets? We are about to purchase a puppy, mainly as a companion for our English Pointer who just loves to play with other dogs. The breeder we are dealing with tells us that there is not much personality difference between Whippet females and males. Our pointer is female and about 40 pounds, she is a little over a year...we are so confused as to whether to get a male or female! Any one have any expereince with bringing a male puppy in with a female? Thanks!
I personally think your pointer would do fine with a male or a female. There's some people I know in our kennel club who have two whippets and they are just about the nicest dogs you could ever hope for. I was very impressed wtih the dogs, they are perfect for this family of 3 boys and the parents.
I agree, if you get same sex dogs, you run the risk of having alpha problems, or dominence issues. Unless your pointer is fixed, then there shouldn't be any problems. Not all dogs have this problem, but the risk is higher when you have same sex animals.
Whippets aren't a breed that displays dominance aggression. The people I know with the two male whippets, both dogs are used in conformation and junior showmanship, and are unneutered, and there are absolutely no issues between the dogs whatsoever.
thanks miniyar! I appreciate the feed back...I guess the breeder was right when she told me that either sex would be fine...SO, I think we are going to go with a Male, for 2 reasons, one being that my pointer likes to play rough and likes to get the other dogs "going", so maybe a male would be slightly larger in size, and secondly she needs a boy to cuddle with!!! (not a very good reason lol!) The breeder says though that females MAY tend to be slightly more independent, and males like to be by your side...UGH its a difficult decision!
