Hi there...i'm new to the forum. I have just purchased a Birman kitty (3 months old) and i need help. She is very sweet but won't stop meowing. I was told by a friend to ignore her when she meows and not pick her up (unless she's quiet). Any suggestions??
I don't know much about cats. Well, actually I don't know anything about cats, but it would seem to me that she is lonely and missing her mommy. I would pick her up and love her. That is my instinct. Poor little kitty. Give her hugs and kisses.
some cats are more vocal than others.. siamese cats come to mind in that. YOu may just have an extremely vocal cat. If picking her up stops the crying, it's hard not to resist it. But you may be reinforcing her belief that when she meows, she gets attention. I'd probably ignore it.
A lot of kittens do this because they are nervous. I would give her time to adjust. But I will warn you, female cats are notorious whiners. My friend rescued a one year old female from a shelter and the cat drives her crazy it meows so much. When I first graduated high school and got my own apartment, I got a female cat and it drove me nuts as well because it meowed all the time. I would normally suggest spraying the kitty with a water bottle or spray bottle with vinegar, but that might make it worse if she is meowing out of anxiety. I would almost keep her in only one room of your house or apartment. That way she can't get overwhelmed, and will learn this area is 'hers'. Put a blanket with a heating pad under the blanket in there, along with food and toys. Let her get used to this room for a few weeks, and then slowly introduce her to the rest of the house. She might be lonely too. You might consider getting another kitten (preferably same sex, otherwise there will be spraying later) to keep her company.
