Well, we have been contemplating very heavily on getting a Chihuahua or a Miniature Poodle. I know that there are people here who are knowledged on both....so tell me why I should get one or the other. I just can't decide! (Last time I did this I ended up with two dogs!) My fiancee' says only 1, so now we have to decide. The only other thing we have been thinking about is the silver schnauzers. I am in love with them too. Help me!!!!
I don't know about Chi's, but I like the long haired better than the short, just because of looks. Unfixed female poodles can be real bitchy. I know, we have 5 toy female and 4 standard females, all unfixed. (thank goodness 2 toys are 5 months and 2 standards are 3 months) They are also very pack oriented. Our oldest toy female is the alpha, and everybody knows it! Are you contemplating breeding and showing? If not, I would get a male. Fixed before he learns to heist his leg. There's a lot to grooming for poodles for show, but for pet trims, if you can handle clippers, you can groom a poodle. Truthfully, if I had a choice for a toy size I would look at: Brussels Griffon Powder Puff Chinese Crested MinPin Papillon Poms Toy Fox Terrier By the way, have you ever had any of your poms in a fox cut/fox trim? Our groomer does it to one of her customers poms and it's absolutely adorable. ltlgto
Katz, I think you should get a chihuahua, but I am biased here because I own one. If you met Ace, though, you'd want one!! My grandma is starting to look for breeders so she can possibly get one in the spring or summer because she loves Ace and has accepted the fact that she cannot have him! =0) The only thing I know about poodles comes from my experience with the black poodle my grandpa found in Mississippi and brought home. No one really liked her because she hated everyone except my grandpa. She would growl if you went near him and show her rotted teeth. If you went to close she'd snap and then cry because it hurt her to bite down on anything with her teeth. But I am sure there are TONS of great poodles out there that would make good pets just like chis =0) Good Luck! Are you leaning more towards one than the other?
I have heard that as far as intelligence, that poodles are more so. Don't know how much truth to that. I do know that at one time poodles were listed as the smartest breed. Chihuahuas are a pain to potty train! My great grandma has a chi, my friend has a chi, and I had a chi and all were very hard to potty train. They all got it eventually, but it was harder than the normal dog. I personally like chihuahuas though because I had one, and they are so lovey and want to be around you always. I love that in a dog. This is going to sound weird, but I like how co-dependent they are too. lol. I like how they want to be carried around in a doggie purse or snuggle under your coat. It's sooooo cute! Plus, chis don't require too much grooming. (unless they are longcoat, and even then it's less than a poodle)
I have a spayed mini poodle, she has been abused is now a good girl with me but does not like others handling her. Sort of bitchy I guess. I like that in her actually. But she is in no way as near as phsycotic (sp) as some of the chi's I've met. Just barely try to pet them and they go ballistic. Poodles are my fave. I actually do like chis and would love a long hair brown one. But for now I'm a poodle person. And even though chi's have short hair they still shed, poodles don't and I love that.
Yes, Chis are not the easiest to potty train, but once they learn, they will never go in the house again :D I'd go with a Poodle, so the Poms don't beat him/her up, lol! ---Allie the Chihuahua http://www.dogster.com/?41063 ---Mönica the Kitty http://www.catster.com/?57596
