Does anyone know all the signs of parvo? Can a pup have a test for it one day and it be negative and then die and two to three days later they come in were she died and the lady say she had parvo because it smells like it.... I never heard of such a thing...the pup had bleeding out her bottom and that was it? can't certain poisons do the same thing? just wondering what you think.... thanks
certain poisons, specifically rat/mice poisons can cause internal bleeding which could come out rectally. blood in the stoll has a particular odor but parvo has a very distinct odor to it. it is like a decaying type of smell. dogs with parvo will generally start off with symptoms of vomiting, not eating, and diarrhea. the bloody stools come in the last stages of parvo, when their intestines start to slough. i am not sure if the test could come back negative if it was really positive, unless it was a test that cannot differetiate between a vaccine response and the actual disease. most of the tests for parvo involve using fecal matter so i doubt that would pick up on a vaccine response. if you are really concerned maybe have a necropsy done with biopsies of the intestines sent out for analysis.
The bloodhound we had got really sick and when we took him to the vets, they said he had giardia. They gave us medication. The medication didn't work, so we came back. They gave us more medication. That didn't work either. Finally they figured out he had parvo. I don't know if he had parvo and giardia and they just didn't see the parvo, or they misdiagnosed him all together but it was so sad. He got skinny really quick, and had blood in his loose stool and vomited and acted really lethargic.
well this is what happen.. I sold my puppy who was five months old friday. she was fine.. she was eating playing and no signs of sickness... the lady came and got her .. took her to her moms. she was fine friday night sat she was acting strange.... then that night she said she (the puppy) snuck outside and went into the little pond that she had it was pouring down rain. the puppie was standing in the pond and pouring rain.. then they took her to the vet.. they tested her and the pravo test came back negative.... she then was sent home with antibiotics and said she should be fine... two days later she died... they found her in the laundry room gone.. blood all over that came out of her bottom... it look like.... then the lady teck from the vet came over and went to the room she died and she said she had parvo it smells like it.... I can't believe she leaves my house and not even a week later she is dead.... I am so heart broken i can't talk about it without crying...... which i am now... i watch her come into this world took such good care of her and watched her grow and she is gone in her short 5 months of living... I am going to fix my female lab and we are not going thru the pain of puppies anymore... i just need to find out if the spca will help me get this done... money wise.. i can't afford it but really want to fix her ..... so that is the sad sad *crying* story....... thank you for taking the time to read this and post back if you do.... by the way she was a yellow lab...
How very sad! Hadn't the puppy been vaccinated against Parvo? Puppies get this vaccine in a series, starting at 8-12 weeks- so she SHOULD have been protected against Parvo. Such a simple thing to do. :( I'm sorry that you're hurting right now- but as long as you learn from this, her life wasn't in vain. Certain vaccinations are VERY important- Parvo, Rabies and Distemper are usually required by law. I applaud you for getting your girl spayed- it's the best thing you can do for her, yourself, and the overflowing shelters. If you're financially unable to afford the surgery- please check http://www.spayusa.org/ for referrals to vets who offer discount services. :)
just a note because i forgot to tell you she did have her shots... all of them..... that is why it is hard for me to believe she got parvo when she had her shots for it...... :( thank you for the site too....
my guess was she either got into rat poison in the new owners house or she could have contracted leptospirosis from being in the pond. lepto can produce the same symptoms you described and is frequently found in standing bodies of water, puddles etc. lepto is common in certain parts of the country.
I live in California.... So I don't know if it is here or not...but my husband and I talked about it last night coming home from the store and we both agree that she got into poison at the owners house... because we haven't heard anything since.. Which is fine because I can't take talking about it anymore.... it was like loosing one of my children... Whatch them come into the world and be taken away that fast... Fixing my female I think is the best choice I/we could make... I feel there are enough people in the world with puppies and in fact to many... why keep having them and letting people make mistakes like that to hear the pup died... I live in a real small town and my heart can't take it... it is like kids... four is plenty for me.... one litter was plenty for me.... I have my female lab that I have always wanted and that is good.. my husband has one of the best hunting chocolate lab in the state and that is enough... the world doesn't need us to add to the over population of dogs.... anyways thanks for your imput and support.........
