Can anyone help me stop my German Shepherd from eating her poop. It's gross. We've tried the powder on her food, but she didn't even try it then. She is 2, and we've had her 6 weeks. She came from a breeder but couldn't be bred. She is really just getting used to being a house dog and having freedom. HELP. Thanks.
i have heard that dogs like to eat cat poop because cats don't completely digest their food so their poop tastes very much like cat food. i can't say i have ever tested that theory though :) as far as your dog eating its own ppoop. if none of the products on the market have been proven successful in stopping her from eating the only things you can do are to keep her on a leash when she is outside to potty so you can immediately correct her from eating it. or follow her around with a poop scooper and scoop it up immediately.
Here's all the stuff I have heard of to add to the poo or give the dog: 'Deter' It's a pill you give to your dog that makes his poo taste nasty (you would think it would already! lol) -to get them to take the pill, put it in a slice of cheese. They won't even know it's there. pinapple juice added to their food or water. Once digested, the pinapple makes poo really bitter cayenne pepper or another very spicy pepper. You put it on the poo and it makes it unbareably spicy. Spray vinegar on the poo Here's the stuff to deter them: Have them on a leash when they go potty, so that if they start to show interest in their poo, you can tug at the lead and say 'NO!' really sternly Clean up the poo as soon as they go so that they are not given the chance to eat it Here's reasons they might be eating it: Could have been a kennel or pet store dog, and learned to eat the poo because they were kept in small enclosures and didn't want to lay in it. (I guess eating it is better?) Could be eating the wrong kind of food. Not getting enough nutrients. Maybe switch to a high quality vet recommended food Could be a pancrease problem. Check with your vet on that one. Good luck! Its VERY hard to break this habit
I have to tell a very gross story. It's about one of my dogs eating cat poop. I keep the litter box in the basement by the washer and dryer so the dogs can't get to it and eat any poop in it.Well one day Sadie did. I was sleeping on the couch ,she went down stairs,I guess had a yummy desert, came up stairs and proceeded to like me on the lips while I was sleeping,There was kitty litter all over her mouth. So gross. I'll never forget that. Yuck.
oh oh! I got one too! lol... When we had our chihuahua, she used to try to do the same thing with the litter box. Sometimes she would grab a kitty poo and run off with it really quick hoping I wouldn't be able to catch her. Well, sometimes she would drop it while she was running. I would have to find it and pick it up really quick. One day I was on the phone and my kids were playing in the living room, and my daughter was only a year old and the dog must have found a way into the litter box, because I look over and my daughter was picking something up off the carpet and immediately put it in her mouth. I ran over and fished it out of her mouth, and sure enough, it was a piece of cat poo! Ick Ick Ick! I flushed her mouth out with soooooo much lemon water (lemons safely sterilize things) and called her pediatrician who laughed at me! She said she would be fine as long as the cat is up to date on his shots and worming and wasn't an outdoor cat. (He's not an outdoor cat, and he was utd on his shots). Needless to say, I invested in a dog gate that day to block off the area the cat box is in and was dry heaving all day just thinking about it.
Doctor's Foster & Smith (the magazine and online store) sell a lot of products to deter pets from eating poop. In one of the mags they actually had a pretty decent article about WHY dogs eat poo. One reason according to them is that if you are potty training a dog and punishing it for pooing in the house, the dog may think it bad to poo AT ALL. So it will eat the poo to try to hide the evidence. I though that was very interesting. Luckily neither of my bullies ever ate any poo. One of them won't even go NEAR poo -- not his own or any one else's. He poos, and runs away on his tip-toes. He's such a girl sometimes!!!!
Yeah it was pretty disgusting. I kick myself for not just getting a gate when we got our chihuahua. But I used to block off the area with laundry baskets or boards, and Snickers was so small so she couldn't jump over them or anything...but she figured a way to push them and squeeze past them. She only got in the litter box like 3 times. But yeah.....I felt sick all day! lol
My son's rott/lab mix used to eat his poop. They tried everything, including pineapple, with zero results. So they gave up and watched him constantly. Lately, they've been giving him 1/2 of a shredded wheat biscuit with his food every day for a different problem. Lo and behold - no more poop eating! Don't know why, but it stopped him completely.
