Lately, I've been having to mix stuff into Kiba's food, unless she wont eat it. She licked the Natural Balance turkey and beef rolls (didnt care for the lamb). But now, I have been buying the ends of the meat at the Deli. Just wondering if this was okay to mix with her food/treat, or if I should just stick with the Natural Balance Food Rolls.
Not a good idea. Most deli meats are EXTREMELY high in salt (Ham and Tureky in particular) or processed way too much for a dog's belly. I like NB rolled food as training treats- but it's ALSO very salty, and I wouldn't use it as a daily food item. It looks like you're using Eukanuba? Please do try a different kibble- especially if she's not showing interest in this one. Euk is a VERY grainy food- and of course, dogs are carnivores- not herbivores. It's not a very high quality food these days. Since you can find the NB food rolls- why don't you try the Natural Balance Ultra Premium Kibble? It's a fantastic food- and HONESTLY- shouldn't cost much more to feed than the Eukanuba! A great kibble (like NB) is very high in calories- which means you feed LESS than you would with a junky, corn filled kibble. My 12-15 lb dogs eat only 1/3-1/2 cup of NB a day (when I feed kibble- I do raw meals usually). You shouldn't have to bribe a dog to eat. :)
Maybe you could switch puppy food and see if she will eat that? You can't keep switching everytime she turns her nose at it otherwise you'll have a picky eater and you definately don't want that. I don't know about the deli meat, I would have said it was okay to feed Kiba the ends of deli meat. But if the other poster thinks it's too high in salt then it probably is. Just keep her kibble available to her all of the time, when she gets hungry enough she'll eat! Good Luck =0) Oh and btw, can I see some new pics of Kiba?! What's her dogster page?
I think Kiba is training you to feed her what *she* wants. Give her kibble and nothing but kibble. No treats, no snacks, no nothing in her food. She won't let herself starve, you just have to be more stubborn and stop giving into those sad puppy eyes.
i have a very picky eater also. not so much that she is picky, but she doesn't eat on a regular basis. she could go a day or two without eating. it seems to be somewhat the norm for breeds like her. i founf that the nb food rolls are great not only for the training treats but also to cut up and mix into her food. scout may not eat all her dry food with the roll pieces mixed in but she will at least eat some on a daily basis vs. once every couple days. if kiba likes the nb food rolls, maybe try the dry dog food of the same brand. deli meat once in awhile basis is not that bad but daily in her dog food is too much. the problem with small breeds is they can be very finicky and the more human food you feed them the more they will decide they want no part of dog food and you will end up cooking for kiba for the next 15 years.
When I first got Layla she was very skinny and very picky. I started tempting her with canned food for breakfast and I found that it seemed to spur her appetite and later, she ate her whole portion of kibble for dinner. Prior to that, she was eating maybe l/4 of the amount recommended for her. I still give her canned food for breakfast, she really loves it.
