Hi everyone. Butch is home and resting. I was looking over his medicine and one of the prescribed meds that he needs to take by mouth (1-1/2 tablets every 12 hours for 4 days, then 1-1/2 tablets by mouth every 24 hours for 4 days) is Rimadyl. In browsing the net periodically I have come across articles about Rimadyl. I never paid much attention to them but got the impression that it could be a dangerous drug. Does anyone have any opinions on this drug? Thanks.
I remember reading something but as with many other drugs, the problems often occur when it's used for a chronic problem, example: your dog takes it every single day for arthritis and has been for the pas t 6 months. I used it on my itty bitty dog after surgery and she was fine.
there are dangers involved with rimadyl in specific breeds such as labradors. it can cause liver and/or kidney failure. anytime a lab is put on this medication bloodwork has to be done prior to administration and every 6 months during its use. this is for long term arthritis pain control. since butch has just had his bloodwork done, maybe just recheck with the vet to make sure his kidney and liver values are normal before starting it. because he is only on it for a few days to help with post op pain he should be okay to take it. make sure to give it with some food as it can cause gi upset. i am glad to see that he is home. that is just wonderful.
