I agree with you. just because there are some bad pit bulls (not that its their fault....all in the owners) doesn't mean they should be banned. not to be racists, but if theres one bad mean black person, should black people be banned from ontario or any other province? no, they wouldn't do that, so why do that to a specific breed of dog? i personally love pit bulls, and disagree with the banning of them. i know they've been banned in ontario, and im hoping to god they don't ban them in bc. i have a pit bull now, and absouluty love the breed, and would like to get another one in the future. keep your fingers crossed everyone that they don't ban pit bulls anywhere else
I am a Pit bull lover for life. This breed of dog I personally think is being condemed by the media and that is just wrong. If our society will ban the Pit bull the list will go on. I personally think it is the owners fault never the dogs. As a society we should not judge this breed of dog by the skin they are in.
here from a neutral point of view. I am not a pit enthusist. i am a dog lover and have no hate for pitbulls. i think your plight is a just one. but the average person, who really is not interested dogs will argue. The validity of thier points are not that far off either. a normal dogs mouth is capable of 100-120 pounds per square inch. that is pretty good. a pit has the power of 190 pounds per square inch in biting power. now i know that the owners are generaly to blame. and sometimes there are crazy pitbulls. The number one biting dog here in the states is the German shepard. the number one dog responsible for fatalities is the pitbull. now I think the numbers here are powerful. I do not want to see a breed get banned anywhere. you are going to need a stronger argument than: it's not the breed, it's the owner. cause on paper it looks like it's the breed.
The truth is every breed of dog can attack a child or ever could turn on its owners. But why does our society blame this breed of dog, ITS ALWAYS THE OWNERS FAULT. People should understand that before they want to buy a dog. They should envestigate recent media coverage related to the breed. Proper training is important when owning a dog. PIT LUV
There is an almost identical post still on the first page right now-- http://www.terrificpets.com/forum/8719.asp Is this the area that you live in? Do you need help with what to do about it? I know some people and have seen a few sites also , that can really help you to do the things that will convince lawmakers to adopt aggressive dog laws instead of breed specific ones. Let me know if you are willing to directly take action in your community and I will help you as best I can. Gunny's right, "It's not the breed, it's the owner," is not enough. It's true, yes, but it does not change the minds of lawmakers. Bringing forth alternative laws that address the problem of aggressive dogs is one way.
pit bull luv. you don't have to tell me. I train Belgian malinois for a sport called schutzhund. it is a german sport of tracking, obedience, and personal protection. I am a huge dog fan and been involvd with training dogs since i have been a little boy. none of the dogs whom i have worked with have bit. but i have seen perfectly trained house pets become viscious. There are some dogs who are just mean. the owner had nothing to with it. The personal proection part of schutzhund requires biting a human with a protective sleeve on command. some people find this very appaling. until they see the dogs. and they are amazed on how loyal and obedient the dogs are. my point of my post is. if you want to save your breed. the general public is not going to listen to it's the owners fault not the dogs. especially if a bite just happened recently or if canada is had a rash of them.
Dog spelled backwards is god. We repect god why don't we repect dogs? All these years we have used dog for work. Not realy repecting there need or emotions. Caring is a thing every one learns but dogs just know it though good times and bad. Some people think dogs are like the wolf they don't need to be feed or loved. Every one needs to me loved. Its part of life. Think of what dogs feel like when their chained up in the cold rain or hot sun with no one to love them or no one to care. Repect is what dogs need and repect is what they should get.
Gunny........................I have thought about this a lot, but never quite managed to put it into words. You did a great job. Society isn't listening to "it is the owner", not the breed. Other breeds have not made the news like the pitbull. No matter who is to blame for it's behavior, or if no one is to blame, that is just the way it is. A lot of people that are deciding the fate of the pitbull do not even own a dog, and some probably just fear dogs in general. Did your dog have to do community service or anything because that dead cat was in your garage?
Here is another point, while I am not sure it will sway lawmakers away from Pitbull bans, I believe it is true nonethless. As a society we can ban Pitbulls, but will that eliminate the threat of poorly trained dangerous animals? I say, no it will not. The individuals who thrive on making these animals fight for sport, or other reasons will find another breed to use for their illicit purpose. In years past, the Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, and German Shepherds have been feared as innately dangerous animals, yet this is not true either. By banning a specific breed, we are treating the symptoms of this problem of dangerous animals, rather than the cause itself.
Tara: You really hit the nail on the head!! Michael Bryant says in the Toronto Star, of the 30 reported attacks (All Breeds) in Winnipeg and Kitchener 30 of the attacks were by PitBulls. So that leads me to believe that 1. these people only own P.B or 2. other attacks by other breeds go unreported. Now that they have enforced the ban, there is only 1 or so reported P.B. attacks a year. Where the heck did all the other dogs go?!?! I find it hard to believe that there are no other dog bites coming into their medical facilities and none being reported to Authorities.
I do not think banning pitbulls will even slow the people that use them to fight down. They will keep doing what they are doing until/if they get caught. Illegal drugs are supposed to be banned in every state, are they?
I truly believe there is no such thing as a bad dog, only bad owners!!!! I love all dogs and honestly have not seen a nasty pit bull yet. Lets put a ban on all the nasty, dog fighting owners who are giving pit bulls a bad name.
PitPat, if you're patient and dilligent enough, you can prove that guy wrong simply by using Google news to search for "Winnipeg" and "Kitchener" +Dog attack. Statistically, it's impossible that NO dogs besides Pit Bulls attack someone, even badly enough to require hospitilization. It sounds like a case of creative ommission.. "Well, there was a Golden Retriever bite, but that was a one-time thing, and the kid only needed a few stitches." Yup, you're hearing this from me, who first came on here to do nothing but blame pit bulls for 99% of all dog attacks. Education helps.
I was watching the new the other night about the whole situation in Ontario in regards to the pit bulls being banned. They are right now inforcing a muzzel law. One guy brought his dog to the shelter because it did not want to wear it. If they start attacking German Shepherds and saying they are allowed out in public only with a muzzel I would give it some time. I would do what ever it took to keep Aisha no matter what. I am not sure if this guy was for real or just something for the media but I was not impressed with this owner. The shelter's are over loaded with this breed right now and the majority will be put to sleep. Why are the owners rushing them there? The law does not require for the dogs to be put to sleep just a leash law, muzzle and no breeding . They showed so many of these dogs behind bars that it was really sad to know what the outcome was going to be.
